Ancienne cité des comtes d'Auvergne devenue épiscopale au XIIe siècle, Billom possède un cœur médiéval préservé avec ses maisons à pans de bois et ses fenêtres à meneaux. Ce patrimoine témoigne d'un riche passé à la fois religieux, intellectuel et surtout commercial.
Surnommée « la ville des marchés » au XIXe siècle, elle fut un centre d'échanges intense où se côtoyaient artisans (bouchers, tanneurs, tisserands) et marchands le long de l'Angaud. On y vendait une grande diversité de produits : denrées alimentaires, bétail, bois ou encore textiles. Le commerce du blé s'organisait sous une halle bâtie entre 1793 et 1795. Bien que cet édifice ait été détruit vers 1970, la place actuelle en conserve la mémoire et accueille toujours un marché hebdomadaire vivant.

A former city of the Counts of Auvergne, which became an episcopal see in the 12th century, Billom boasts a well-preserved medieval heart with its half-timbered houses and mullioned windows. This heritage testifies to a rich past that was religious, intellectual, and above all, commercial.
Nicknamed "the market town" in the 19th century, it was a bustling center of trade where artisans (butchers, tanners, weavers) and merchants mingled along the Angaud River. A wide variety of products were sold there: foodstuffs, livestock, wood, and textiles. The wheat trade was organized under a market hall built between 1793 and 1795. Although this building was destroyed around 1970, the current square preserves its memory and still hosts a lively weekly market.
