Store Høj ligger som en markant bakke i det ellers flade landskab på Kalvebod Fælled. Højen er menneskeskabt og blev anlagt som et udsigtspunkt i forbindelse med områdets tid som militært øvelsesterræn. Herfra kunne man få overblik over de åbne vidder, og stedet blev blandt andet brugt som observationspunkt. Kalvebod Fælled blev inddæmmet i 1943 og består af tidligere havbund, hvilket forklarer det flade terræn omkring højen.
Store Høj Sø er opstået i lavninger i det inddæmmede landskab og er i dag et vigtigt område for fugle og andet dyreliv. Tagrør, åbent vand og fugtige bredder skaber gode forhold for ænder, svaner, rørhøg, rørdrum og mange smådyr. Her kan man opleve naturen tæt på fra gangbroer og fugleskjul. Gangbroer og fugleskjul findes takket være lokale ildsjæle. Da anlægget var nedslidt og truet af lukning, gik en borgergruppe sammen og samlede penge ind gennem donationer og fondsstøtte. Omkring 420.000 kr. blev rejst, så faciliteterne kunne genopføres. I dag drives arbejdet videre af en lokal forening, som passer området og skaber naturoplevelser for besøgende 🌿🐦

This is the bonus for the Adventure Lab "Store Høj." While completing the Adventure Lab, you will receive information at each stage that will help you determine where the bonus cache is located.
Store Høj rises as a distinctive hill in the otherwise flat landscape of Kalvebod Fælled. The hill is man-made and was built as a viewpoint during the time when the area was used as a military training ground. From here, it was possible to oversee the wide open surroundings, and the site was used as an observation point. Kalvebod Fælled was reclaimed from the sea in 1943 and consists of former seabed, which explains the flat terrain surrounding the hill.
Store Høj Lake formed in depressions in the reclaimed landscape and today serves as an important habitat for birds and other wildlife. Reeds, open water, and wet shorelines provide excellent conditions for ducks, swans, marsh harriers, bitterns, and many smaller animals. Visitors can experience the nature up close from boardwalks and bird hides.
The boardwalks and bird hides exist thanks to dedicated local volunteers. When the structures became worn down and were at risk of closing, a group of local residents came together and raised funds through donations and foundation support. About DKK 420,000 was raised to rebuild the facilities. Today, the work is continued by a local association that maintains the area and creates nature experiences for visitors. 🌿🐦
