Geocache Description:

Welcome to Vikings Ahoy!

This cache is placed on a public road with views towards RAF Honington, home to 611 Volunteer Gliding Squadron—one of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets’ active gliding units.

The squadron operates the Viking T1 glider, a modern two-seat sailplane used to introduce young people to the fundamentals of military aviation. Silent, graceful, and often appearing unexpectedly overhead, these aircraft are a far cry from their fearsome namesake—yet the name Viking fits surprisingly well.

⚓ Why “Vikings Ahoy”?

The title is a playful nod to two very different kinds of Vikings:

  • The Viking glider, flown here by 611 VGS

  • The seafaring Vikings of history, whose longships once passed silently across horizons—much like gliders do today

If you’re lucky enough to visit at the weekend, you may hear the distant winch launch or spot a Viking circling above, riding invisible currents of air.

✈️ About 611 Volunteer Gliding Squadron

611 VGS plays a vital role in RAF Air Cadet training, offering cadets their first taste of flight and inspiring future pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals. Operating from RAF Honington, the squadron continues a proud tradition of gliding excellence and youth development.

🧭 Cache Notes

  • The cache is located entirely on public land

  • No access to RAF property is required or permitted

  • Please be discreet and respectful—this is an active military area

  • Feel free to add photo of sightings of gliders if you see any during your visit! (not required for logging)

Happy caching — and Vikings Ahoy!
