Franz Joseph Cliffs

 Stâncile lui Franz Joseph sunt situate în Munții Bucegi, lângă Sinaia, Valea Prahovei, România. Sunt situate în imediata apropiere a Pajiștii Regale, folosită adesea de foștii monarhi ai României pentru a găzdui ospețe pentru cei mai importanți oaspeți ai lor. Stâncile aparțin Masivului Bucegi. Masivul Bucegi reprezintă un larg sinclinal, de direcție nord-sud, cuprinzând depozite sedimentare mezozoice, așezate în transgresiune peste un fundament de șisturi cristaline. Aceste depozite sunt formate în cea mai mare parte din calcare jurasice, conglomerate de Bucegi și gresii micacee. Către marginea răsăriteană a masivului, în porțiunea inferioară a abruptului prahovean, conglomeratele de Bucegi se rezeamă pe formații ale flișului cretacic inferior, cuprinzând stratele de Sinaia, precum și depozitele de marne și gresii aparținând etajelor Barremian și Apțian. Stâncile sunt alcătuite din conglomerate. Conglomeratele sunt roci sedimentare consolidate, formate din sfărâmăturile rotunjite ale unor roci mai vechi (materiale grosiere (sfărămături de stâncă, bolovani de râu, pietrișuri și prundișuri transportate de ape etc.) legate printr-un ciment natural, în general de origine calcaroasă, argilă, silice etc. Un conglomerat este o rocă detritică din categoria psefitelor (ruditelor), formată din particule rotunjite, cu dimensiuni mai mari de 2 mm (pietrișuri, bolovănișuri), legate prin intermediul unei matrice sau al unui ciment. Conglomeratul este o rocă compactă cu aspect de pietriș litificat și, de obicei, masivă.

 The Franz Joseph's Cliffs are located in the Bucegi Mountains near Sinaia, Prahova Valley, Romania. They are situated in close proximity to the Royal Meadow, used often by former Romanian monarchs to host feasts for their most important guests.  The rocks belong to the Bucegi Massif. The Bucegi Massif represents a broad north–south–oriented syncline, comprising Mesozoic sedimentary deposits laid down transgressively over a crystalline schist basement. These deposits consist mainly of Jurassic limestones, Bucegi conglomerates, and micaceous sandstones. Toward the eastern margin of the massif, in the lower part of the Prahova escarpment, the Bucegi conglomerates rest on formations of the Lower Cretaceous flysch, including the Sinaia strata, as well as marl and sandstone deposits belonging to the Barremian and Aptian stages. The rocks are composed of conglomerates. Conglomerates are consolidated sedimentary rocks formed from rounded fragments of older rocks (coarse materials such as rock fragments, river boulders, gravel, and pebbles transported by water, etc.) bound together by a natural cement, generally of calcareous, clayey, siliceous, or similar origin. A conglomerate is a detrital rock in the category of psephites (rudites), formed from rounded particles larger than 2 mm (gravel and cobbles), bound together by a matrix or cement. Conglomerate is a compact rock with the appearance of lithified gravel and is usually massive.
