Geocache Description:

Maryland Geocaching Society Cache Across Maryland 2026

Cell service can be spotty in this area, so it’s a good idea to download the cache information to an offline list before heading out. Don't be tricked by your GPS arrow showing the hide just half a mile from parking, it's closer to three-quarters of a mile using the blazed trail system and about a mile and a half round trip. There are a couple different trails one can use. One recommendation would be to follow the white blazed trail which is wide and easy to follow and takes you gently uphill until you meet up with the red blazed trail to switchback towards the cache hide. A side trail off the red-blazed trail takes you to the old mine and the CAM cache nearby. Thornbushes guard the area around the hide, so pick your path carefully. Be sure to stay on the marked trails heading back to avoid more thornbushes. Trails can become quite muddy from snow melt or rain, be sure to wear the appropriate footwear.

Nestled in the scenic mountains of western Maryland, Deep Creek Lake is the state’s largest freshwater lake and one of its most beloved outdoor destinations. Located in Garrett County, the lake stretches across nearly 4,000 acres and is surrounded by rolling forested hills, charming lake communities, and year-round recreational opportunities.

Deep Creek Lake was created in the 1920s when a dam was built across Deep Creek to generate hydroelectric power. Over time, the area grew into a premier vacation destination while still maintaining the natural beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. Today, the lake is known for its peaceful coves, scenic shorelines, and spectacular seasonal views—from vibrant fall foliage to snow-covered winter landscapes.

During the warmer months, the lake becomes a hub for outdoor recreation. Visitors enjoy boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, swimming, and lakeside relaxation. The surrounding forests and nearby trails provide excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the mountain terrain. Anglers are drawn to the lake for its variety of fish species, including bass, trout, and walleye.

Just a short drive away is Deep Creek Lake State Park, which offers sandy beaches, hiking trails, and nature programs that help visitors learn about the region’s wildlife and ecosystems. The park’s scenic shoreline provides some of the best public access to the lake.

Deep Creek Lake is also a four-season destination. Autumn paints the surrounding mountains in brilliant shades of red and gold, while winter transforms the area into a snowy retreat with nearby skiing at Wisp Resort. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and returning wildlife, making it a beautiful time to explore the quieter trails and waterways.

Whether you’re enjoying a day on the water, hiking through mountain forests, or simply watching the sunset reflect across the lake’s calm surface, Deep Creek Lake captures the essence of Maryland’s mountain beauty and outdoor adventure. 🌄🚤🍂
