Geocache Description:

Tafoni @ Cap de l'Horta
🇪🇸/🇬🇧/🇩🇪

🇪🇸

1. Diferentes propiedades de la roca

Dentro de la arenisca varían:

* el grado de cementación

* la porosidad

* la resistencia de las distintas capas

2. Retroalimentación microclimática

Las cavidades ya formadas:

* retienen la humedad durante más tiempo

* favorecen las reacciones químicas

* intensifican la meteorización inducida por sales

Cap de l’Horta is an idyllic headland located northeast of Alicante, featuring impressive rocky cliffs, small coves, and wide views over the Mediterranean Sea. Away from the large beaches, this stretch of coastline offers a quiet, natural landscape that is ideal for walking, photography, and discovering unique coastal landforms. In addition, tafoni can be observed on some of the rock faces.

What are tafoni?

Tafoni are concave cavities, usually rounded to oval in shape, that develop on rock surfaces. They often occur in groups and can range from just a few centimeters to several meters in diameter. They are characterized by relatively smooth interior surfaces and sharply defined edges.

In which types of rock can tafoni be found?

The tafoni found here have developed in a sedimentary rock, a sandstone (calcarenite). Sandstones are particularly susceptible to weathering because the cement binding the sand grains together is significantly less resistant than the quartz grains themselves.

Tafoni do not only occur in marine environments 🌊 like the one found here. They are also present in deserts, mountains, Antarctica, and even on Mars.

Formation of tafoni

The formation of tafoni is the result of several interacting processes:

 Salt-induced weathering

Dissolved salts enter the pores and microcracks of the rock together with moisture. During repeated wetting and drying cycles, these salts crystallize. Crystal growth generates pressure that dislodges mineral particles from the rock structure.

Chemical weathering

The cement of the sandstone (e.g., calcite or clay minerals) is weakened or dissolved by chemical reactions. As a result, the rock locally loses strength and becomes more easily eroded.

Physical weathering

Fluctuations in temperature and moisture cause stress within the rock, opening existing weak zones and accelerating weathering processes.

Explanation of size differences between small and large tafoni

The pronounced size differences between tafoni can be explained by **differential weathering**:

1. Different rock properties

Within the sandstone, variations occur in:

* degree of cementation

* porosity

* strength of individual layers

Areas with weaker cement are eroded more rapidly and form larger tafoni.

2. Microclimatic feedback

Already formed cavities:

* retain moisture for longer periods

* promote chemical reactions

* enhance salt-induced weathering

➡️ As a result, larger tafoni grow faster than smaller ones.

3. Different stages of development

Not all tafoni form at the same time:

* small cavities represent early stages of development

* large tafoni are usually older and have undergone multiple weathering cycles

4. Height-dependent process intensity

Tafoni located in the middle to lower parts of the rock face are often more pronounced because:

* moisture availability is higher

* weathering processes can act for longer periods

Was ist Tafoni?

 1. Unterschiedliche Gesteinseigenschaften

Innerhalb des Sandsteins variieren:

* Zementierungsgrad

* Porosität

* Festigkeit einzelner Schichten

 2. Mikroklimatische Rückkopplung:

Bereits entstandene Vertiefungen:

* halten Feuchtigkeit länger zurück

* begünstigen chemische Reaktionen

* verstärken salzinduzierte Verwitterung

➡️ Größere Tafoni wachsen daher schneller als kleinere.

3. Unterschiedliche Entwicklungsdauer

* die Feuchteverfügbarkeit höher ist

* Verwitterungsprozesse länger wirken können
