L’edificio che oggi ospita il Museo Civico era integrato nelle mura della città vecchia e svolgeva funzioni di controllo e difesa, probabilmente come torre o struttura militare a ridosso delle fortificazioni. Le murature massicce e l’impianto chiuso rispondono alla necessità di proteggere Bari da attacchi via terra e via mare, soprattutto tra epoca normanna e sveva.
Sotto il Museo Civico esiste un’area ipogea con ambienti medievali e cisterne, legati alle antiche mura della città. Per anni questi spazi sono rimasti chiusi o poco accessibili, e solo in tempi recenti sono stati riscoperti e valorizzati in occasione di visite guidate ed eventi speciali.

The building that now houses the Civic Museum was integrated into the old city walls and served a surveillance and defense function, likely as a tower or military structure adjacent to the fortifications. The massive walls and closed layout served the purpose of protecting Bari from attacks by land and sea, especially between the Norman and Swabian eras.
Beneath the Civic Museum lies an underground area with medieval rooms and cisterns, connected to the ancient city walls. For years, these spaces remained closed or difficult to access, and only recently have they been rediscovered and showcased during guided tours and special events.
