The Levada is considered one of the largest engineering projects in the Azores and was opened in 1964 after four years of construction and a seven-year planning phase. The channel is situated at an altitude of 680 meters and is 10 kilometers long (about 8 kilometers of which are walkable). Its main function was to supply water for hydroelectric power generation. Water is collected at various points along the route and then directed to the small Varadouro hydroelectric power plant.
It is wonderful to walk here, among the trees and green vegetation. With different kinds of hanging mosses and sometimes mist, you feel as though you are in a fairy-tale world. The atmosphere here is breathtakingly beautiful.
In some sections, you have a view of the landscape and the volcanic cones at Capelo. Along the way, you also have the chance to spot birds such as the blackbird, chaffinch, and goldcrest. And every now and then, you hear the buzzard calling as it flies above the trees.
The path is easy to walk and can sometimes be a bit muddy after a heavy rain, so good shoes are recommended. Here and there, they are carrying out restoration work, such as laying stepping stones on the Levada, removing fallen trees, and raising the steps. This walk is definitely worth doing. A Levada é considerada um dos maiores projetos técnicos dos Açores e foi inaugurada em 1964, após quatro anos de construção e uma fase de planeamento de sete anos. O canal situa-se a uma altitude de 680 metros e tem 10 quilómetros de comprimento (dos quais cerca de 8 quilómetros são percorríveis a pé). A sua principal função era fornecer água para a geração de energia hidroelétrica. A água é recolhida em diversos pontos ao longo do percurso e depois conduzida para a pequena central hidroelétrica de Varadouro.
É maravilhoso caminhar aqui, entre árvores e vegetação verde. Com diferentes tipos de musgos pendentes e por vezes com neblina, sente-se como se estivesse num mundo de contos de fadas. A atmosfera aqui é de uma beleza de tirar o fôlego.
Em alguns pontos tem-se vista sobre a paisagem e sobre os cones vulcânicos em Capelo. Pelo caminho, também tem a oportunidade de observar aves, como o melro, o tentilhão e o reinhardito. E de vez em quando ouve-se o gavião a chamar enquanto voa por cima das árvores.
O caminho é fácil de percorrer e por vezes pode ficar um pouco lamacento após uma forte chuva, por isso são recomendados bons sapatos.
Aqui e ali estão a ser realizadas obras de restauro, como colocar pedras de passagem na Levada, remover árvores caídas e reforçar degraus.
Esta caminhada vale definitivamente a pena.
