National Sasquatch Awareness Day, also known as National Bigfoot Day, is observed in October. This day is celebrated by Bigfoot believers to commemorate the filming of the iconic Patterson-Gimlin film on October 20, 1967 as seen below:
Join us in Northern Utah to visit with your fellow cachers and Sasquatch Hunters! We had about 50 caching/Bigfoot enthusiasts come last year and I would love to see that many again so invite any cachers/Bigfoot lovers you know!
Reasons You Might Want To Come:
- Snacks and water provided!
- Prizes for the Rally winners (and consolation prizes for the not-winners) - I'll plan on 7 playing cards per person so we can get some better hands this year! Prizes include trackables, 3D printed ready to go caches, magnetic nanos, an ammo box, and more!
- Playground in the same park (in case you want to bring muggles or less enthusiastic cachers) - I also have some little activities (crossword and word search) and bigfoot themes coloring pages/crayons for kiddos or young at heart.
- Service project or swag - I'll have materials for rock painting (with acrylic paint markers so it's easy and relatively clean) - make your own swag or make happy rocks that you or I can place around northern Utah to put smiles on faces
- I will place a new Adventure lab in town which will be your guide around town while searching for Bigfoot
- I'll place some new geocaches in Wellsville before the event to find as well while you're here (multi, traditional, mystery, earthcache, wherigo, letterbox, something for everybody!) You can earn the International EarthCache Day Souvenir on this date!
- To visit the famed and exciting little town of Wellsville in CACHE valley
- The Smiley :-)
- And to talk to other awesome geocachers like yourself!
- Check out the new EarthCaches in Logan Canyon GeoTrail if you have extra time!
- A new letterbox hiking power trail on south end of town
- A new "famed" ReadingRambo cemetery adventure lab in Wellsvill
- Reasonably close to a Maverick (for those with a Diet Coke addiction)
- Fun "survey" type questions to answer anonymously at the pavilion (e.g. Do you believe in Bigfoot? What's the best geocaching app? What advice would you give to new cachers? Any caches that you need that one of us could potentially help with? like a CITO held on a Tuesday or a 4.5/5 difficulty cache for Fizzy, etc.)
- Cache container exchange - if you have extra cache containers you're not planning on using, feel free to bring them to swap!
- If anyone trades the "collective personal trade item swag" things, I'll bring mine to swap if they get made in time.
Reasons You Might Not Want To Come:
- It's the same date/time as your Grandma's 100th birthday party (or you could just bring Grandma, who doesn't love Bigfoot???)
- Gas gets to over $5 a gallon... (I had to up the limit from last year's $4 a gallon
) I'm hoping to help you get the most bang for your buck for coming clear up or down to my neck of the woods...
- You don't like fun and/or geocaching
Tentative Schedule of Events:
10:00 - 10:10 a.m. - Sign the event log, get instructions for Poker Run. This year you'll collect a sticker from each of the 5 Adventure Lab Stops for your Bigfoot tracker passport. You can get a sticker for finding the Adventure Lab Bonus and another Bonus Cache. For each sticker on your passport, you'll get a playing card to build your best hand. You can complete the lab on your own or with a group. Locations will be mainly around the Wellsville Park block. Including the walk to both bonuses, it's a little over a mile to walk the whole thing. You can walk or drive! One bonus is a couple blocks away.
10:10 a.m. - Adventure Lab will be turned on! If this is your first time doing an Adventure Lab, I would be happy to help you get started!!
10:15 -11:00 a.m. - Poker Run! At each of 5 stops for the Adventure Lab, after you answer the lab question, take a look around to spot Sasquatch sticker - and add it to your passport. Bring your passport back with you to the park pavilion by 11 a.m.
11 a.m. - Reassemble at the park, and bring your Bigfoot passport to the Scoring Table. We will deal out your cards (up to 7 depending on how many stickers you got), and tally the results (who has the best and worst poker hands) and determine the Winners and Losers (worst hands get prizes as well)!
11:15 a.m. - Group Photo with Log/flag
11:30 a.m. - Winners announced and prizes awarded
During any portion of the event time you can also:
- Visit with other cachers
- Have snacks and water (provided)
- Find nearby caches
- Do activities at the pavilion - Q&A, rock painting, kid crafts
- Take a selfie with Bigfoot or Yeti backdrop
If you don't want to do the Poker Run portion, you're welcome to just come to the park at any point during the event! Also if you can't stay the whole time, it's totally fine to come and go as you please! If you'd like to help out with this year's event, I could use a couple of people for small chunks of time.
Please post a "Will Attend" log if you're planning on coming so I can make sure to have enough stuff ready for the Poker Run. See you this fall!
