Nairne is a small township in the Adelaide Hills and is about 7 kilometres from Mount Barker, with a population of 5,082 (as at 2021).
Nairne was founded by Matthew Smillie in 1839 and named for his wife's family (Elizabeth Corse Nairne), the town being only three years younger than the state of South Australia.
In 1854 the District Council of Nairne was established to govern local affairs of the town and its surrounds extending past Callington to the east.
Chapman's Bacon Factory was founded in Nairne in 1899 by the Chapman family and was closed in 2002 and has since been developed into a successful and thriving complex including a supermarket, post office and several variety shops.
Nairne still retains its colonial village feel and is the second largest township in the Mount Barker Council area boasting a range of hotels, cafes, supermarket, and more. The town also features important civic spaces such as Byethorne Park, Nairne Village Green and the Recreation Ground.
You will find The District Hotel nestled in the centre of town and this is our epicurean destination on this occasion.
Established in 1851 this unique hotel has a pop of character in every corner where find yourself a spot and relax all day.
During these warmer months, we can relax in the Beer Garden with lawn areas and plenty of shade from the large elm trees. It’s almost like being in someone’s backyard.
Should you be enticed to enjoy a repast, the bill of fare can be found here (and as file attachment to this cache listing).

All are welcome. You can stay the entire time or just pop in ...and of course there are a plethora of caches located in the surrounding areas and regions you may travel through to attend.
