Geocache Description:

The Three Kings area in Auckland was once made up of several volcanic cones, formed thousands of years ago. Māori knew the place as Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta, and it was an important and well used area long before Europeans arrived. The cones stood out on the landscape and were part of everyday life for the people who lived nearby.

When Auckland began to grow in the late 1800s, the cones were seen less as taonga and more as a handy source of stone. Quarrying slowly ate away at them. Bit by bit, two of the main cones were cut down, their rock used to build roads and buildings across the city.

One cone remained. It was the largest, and people started calling it Big King. By the time machines could have finished the job, attitudes had changed. People began to realise what was being lost, not just the hills themselves, but the stories and history tied to them.

Today, Big King stands alone. It is the last reminder of the original Three Kings. The geocache is a camoflaged tube, it can fit a pencil, but has none at the moment. you will need your own pen. Use the parking waypoint for help as you cannot park along the road of the new neighbourhood Taurangi is the new neighbourhood where the other two kings once stood.

The geocache is a pill bottle. inside, there is a waterproof logbook only. byop
