Geocache Description:

In Madeira, the history of the construction of levadas (irrigation channels) is intertwined with that of the people and their settlement.

The first levadas were built in the early days of colonisation, in the 15th century. They were built because of the need to bring large quantities of water from the north-facing slopes, where it is abundant, to the south side of the island, which is easier to inhabit and where most of the plantations, particularly sugar cane, have always been located.

The most recent ones were built in the 1940s and were used to supply water to hydroelectric power stations, which had been built throughout the island.

These canals cover more than 1,500 km in Madeira and can be explored on foot, making them a popular way for tourists to visit places of great scenic beauty on the island. (https://levadasdamadeira.weebly.com/histoacuteria-das-levadas.html)

This cache aims to pay tribute to those brave men who built the levadas, sometimes risking their lives, so that the Madeirans of yesteryear could survive by cultivating the land.
