Geocache Description:

Welcome to Sadie’s Beach, a quiet stretch of shoreline on Thursday Island (Waiben) that holds far more history than first meets the eye.

The beach takes its name from Sadie Loban, with the name coming into local use in the 1970s. Over the years, this area has supported many forms of community use.

Just above the beach lies part of the Milman Hill World War II defence complex. During the Second World War, Thursday Island was a strategic military outpost, critical to the defence of northern Australia and the Torres Strait shipping routes. Following the bombing of Darwin in 1942, the island was heavily fortified. From positions overlooking this beach, Australian forces operated searchlights, observation posts, command points, and defensive installations, scanning the Strait for enemy movement and protecting the harbour below.

Remnants of this defensive network remain scattered through the bushland above Sadie’s Beach, quietly embedded in the landscape and slowly reclaimed by time.

As you search for this geocache, take a moment to notice the contrasts this place holds: a peaceful shoreline shaped by community life and cultural practice, set beneath hills once defined by vigilance and wartime urgency. Sadie’s Beach sits at the intersection of natural beauty, local memory, and national history.

Cache container:
The geocache container is a small red bison tube, weatherproof and suitable for the location.

Hide method:
The container is hidden at approximately eye level and is discreetly placed so it is not visible to the general public. It can be retrieved without moving, damaging, or interfering with any structures.

Location description:
The cache is located in a publicly accessible foreshore area. The immediate vicinity is open and well maintained, with no bush bashing, climbing, or special equipment required. Access is straightforward and safe at all times.

Coordinate accuracy:
The coordinates are accurate as they were cross-checked using the What3Words app and verified against multiple mapping services.

Optional Quest:
If you wish, include a selfie with the one-of-a-kind sign as part of your log. Those familiar with the Torres Strait will recognise it immediately.

Cache responsibly, respect the site, and enjoy uncovering a small but meaningful piece of Thursday Island’s story.
