Geocache Description:

Seeing as we can’t be at the Tassie Mega, let’s talk Tassie and learn a few things about Tasmania.

Tasmania, Australia's island state, boasts world-class wilderness, unique wildlife like the Tasmanian Devil, and pristine air, with over 40% of its land protected in national parks and World Heritage areas; it's known as the "Apple Isle" for its history in apple growing, has Australia's deepest lake (Lake St. Clair), and its capital, Hobart, is Australia's second-oldest city, offering pure rainwater, Southern Lights, and convict history.

Geography & Nature

  • Island State: An island south of mainland Australia, separated by the Bass Strait, encompassing Tasmania and over 300 smaller islands.
  • Protected Lands: 42% of the state is protected in national parks, reserves, or World Heritage sites, including the Tasmanian Wilderness.
  • Clean Air: Home to the cleanest air in the world, measured at Cape Grim.
  • Deepest Lake: Contains Australia's deepest freshwater lake, Lake St. Clair.
  • Tall Trees: Features some of the oldest trees and tallest flowering plants on Earth, like the Huon Pine and Mountain Ash.

Wildlife

  • Tasmanian Devil: The world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, unique to the island.
  • Monotremes: One of the few places to see the world's only two monotremes (platypus & echidna).
  • Tasmanian Tiger: The famously extinct thylacine's last known habitat.

Culture & History

  • Colonial Past: Was once a major penal colony, with sites like Port Arthur now UNESCO World Heritage areas.
  • "Apple Isle": Historically a massive global apple exporter.
  • Hobart: Australia's second-oldest city and capital, known for its art scene (MONA) and gourmet food.

Unique Features

  • Southern Lights: Often visible from the island, especially Hobart, due to its southern latitude.
  • Pure Rainwater: Home to the world's only bottled rainwater approved for drinking.
  • Unique Geology: Features natural phenomena like Tessellated Pavement near Eaglehawk Neck.
