Benvenuti sulle rive del Ticino, uno dei fiumi più importanti e suggestivi dell’Italia settentrionale.
Questa geocache vi porta in un punto simbolico: il luogo in cui il fiume ri-prende forma, uscendo dal Lago Maggiore tra Sesto Calende e Castelletto Ticino, iniziando un viaggio che attraversa regioni, epoche e storie.
Qualche Curiosità
Il Ticino nasce ufficialmente dal lago in Italia, ma le sue prime sorgenti si trovano molto più a nord, nelle Alpi della Val Bedretto (Canton Ticino, Svizzera). Il fiume scende verso il Lago Maggiore, lo attraversa e poi prosegue il suo corso interamente italiano fino a confluire nel Po vicino a Pavia.
La sua lunghezza complessiva supera i 250 km e il suo bacino è uno dei più ricchi d’acqua dell’arco alpino.
È noto come “il fiume azzurro”, per il colore limpido e quasi turchese delle sue acque nei tratti più puliti e selvaggi.
Un fiume protetto
Lungo buona parte del suo percorso italiano, il Ticino attraversa e forma il cuore del Parco del Ticino, la più antica area naturale protetta d’Italia (istituita nel 1974). Qui trovano casa aironi, garzette e martin pescatori, volpi, tassi e caprioli che si dividono le rive circostanti e le spiaggette di ghiaietta e i boschi di querce, ontani e pioppi.
L’area del Parco è riconosciuta come Riserva della Biosfera UNESCO e rappresenta uno degli ecosistemi fluviali meglio conservati del Paese.
Il luogo della cache
Il punto in cui il Ticino esce dal Lago Maggiore è affascinante: l’acqua rallenta, si apre, poi accelera di nuovo entrando nel letto del fiume.
Siamo nel tratto che storicamente segna il confine tra Lombardia e Piemonte, da sempre via di transito per pescatori, commercianti e, oggi, amanti di canoa, trekking e ciclismo.
Da qui inizia un percorso ricco di ponti storici, mulini, centrali idroelettriche e antichi guadi, alcuni ancora visibili.

This geocache brings you to a symbolic point: the place where the river takes shape again, emerging from Lake Maggiore between Sesto Calende and Castelletto Ticino, beginning a journey that crosses regions, eras, and stories.
A Few Curiosities
The Ticino officially begins at the lake in Italy, but its first sources are located much further north, in the Alps of Val Bedretto (Canton Ticino, Switzerland). The river flows down toward Lake Maggiore, crosses it, and then continues its entirely Italian course until it joins the Po near Pavia.
Its total length exceeds 250 km, and its basin is one of the most water-rich in the Alpine arc.
It is known as “the blue river” due to the clear, almost turquoise color of its waters in the cleanest and wildest stretches.
A Protected River
Along much of its Italian route, the Ticino flows through and forms the heart of the Ticino Park, the oldest protected natural area in Italy (established in 1974). Herons, egrets, kingfishers, foxes, badgers, and roe deer inhabit the surrounding banks, the small gravel beaches, and the oak, alder, and poplar woods.
The park is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, representing one of the best-preserved river ecosystems in the country.
The Cache Location
The point where the Ticino leaves Lake Maggiore is fascinating: the water slows down, widens, then speeds up again as it enters the riverbed.
We are in the stretch that historically marks the border between Lombardy and Piedmont, long a transit route for fishermen, merchants, and today for canoeing, trekking, and cycling enthusiasts.
From here begins a route rich in historic bridges, mills, hydroelectric plants, and ancient fords, some of which are still visible.
