Following In People's Steps

Last summer, CynicalHipster and I were driving to Midwest Geobash. I like to think I know a lot of interesting random knowledge, but I always learn something new from him. One specific conversation topic was so interesting, that it inspired a puzzle idea. However, the exact implementation of such a puzzle eluded me, so I shelved it for the time being. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. We were driving to finish the Maple Rapids geoart, and we talked about the exact same topic! Now I had to make this puzzle. If he happens to remember what we talked about, he'll have a little head start on solving it. Have fun!
