Geocache Description:

Proleek Dolmen

a dolmen, 3 standing stones with a huge cap stone on top

Proleek Dolmen is a Stone Age Portal Tomb it dates back to between 3,000-2,000 B.C. Its capstone is estimated to weigh about 40 tonnes and it rests on three standing stones. This Dolmen is one of Irelands best known megalithic tombs according to the Heritage Ireland website.

The dolmen is located on the picturesque Cooley Peninsula, on the grounds of the Ballymascanlon Hotel. A golf course has been developed by the hotel around this Dolmen but public access is available from the hotel car park as well as from back entrance waypoint given. It's about a 10 minute scenic walk from the hotel car park to the Dolmen and it passes by a lovely walled garden and old buildings as well as a river, the walk is well sign posted all the way. The path also crosses the golf course so beware of stray golf balls.
