Geocache Description:

🇬🇧

With Flo, we share a great passion for geocaching: EarthCaches đŸ„°. We are intense rock hunters! đŸȘšđŸ˜„ You could even say it’s a real crush đŸ€ą. Our second geocaching passion is GeoArt đŸ€©. So we pushed ourselves a bit and decided to mix the two. A big headache to set up đŸ˜”â€, but in the end, totally doable.

Questions : Locate the staircase shown in the photo above and answer the following:

1 - What are the names of the main crystals that make up marble ?

2 - Based on your observation, is this veined, brecciated, or cloudy marble ?

3 - What is the color of this marble and the color of its veining ?

4 - Take a photo in front of this wall (without the marble), with your geocaching username visible, and make a ✌ sign with your hand.

EarthCache Rules: "Log this "Found it" cache and send me your suggested answers either via my profile or via email, and I will contact you if there is a problem."

Lesson :

History and definition : Marble was formed approximately 400 million years ago. In geology, marble is a metamorphic rock derived from limestone and composed primarily of calcite crystals. Increased pressure and temperature transformed this material into marble in certain parts of the world.

This rock has graced some of the most beautiful works of art and the facades of luxurious buildings, highlighting a rich and colorful heritage. Naturally elegant, the smooth, silky grain of marble is used in the creation of sculptures and decorative objects.

Varieties and characteristics: Marbles exhibit a wide variety of colors (white, beige, cream, red, blue, green), although the base color of calcite is white. The veins, known as marbling, appeared under the effect of excessive pressure; the marble cracked, creating passages for organic or mineral sediments that gave it its color. Marble varieties can be classified into three groups. Veined marbles are uniform in color and traversed by veins of varying colors. Breccia marbles are formed from fragments of marble and other rocks. Cloudy marbles are also composed of fragments, but in a cloud-like pattern.

Happy GĂ©ocaching everyone 😎
