I really don’t like streaks. Back in 2013, during the “31 Days of Geocaching”, 31 souvenirs were available. One for each day in August with a “found it” or “attended”. While we earned all 31 souvenirs, that experience convinced me that streaks aren’t for me.
So, why is “streak” in the name of this Unchallenge? And what does Quinquennial mean? Let’s start with the latter. Quinquennial means “1. Consisting of or lasting for five years; 2. occurring or being done every five years.” We want the first definition. The streak aspect is that I want you to find a cache on some specific date for five years in a row. Which date? I’ll leave that to you to decide.
Do you celebrate your birthday by finding a cache? That’ll work. Maybe you celebrate your anniversary by finding a cache. Or you celebrate New Year’s Day (or New Year’s Eve) by finding a cache. Perhaps the Fourth of July, or May Day, or the solstices, or the equinoxes, or Blue Switch Day…any date that you want.
For example, we found geocaches on May 13 in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
5/13/2015 GCHW1X Menu Falls in Zion (virtual)
5/13/2016 GC65XMP SANTA COA #2 (traditional)
5/13/2017 GC6856B Pay It Forward #24 (traditional)
5/13/2018 GCG2WR THE MEN in Blue (virtual)
5/13/2019 GC3DFFT Serenity (traditional)
But what if your special date is February 29? Okay, but you’ll need 3 successive finds. For example:
2/29/2016 GC69QNX Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner (traditional)
2/29/2020 GC60QY0 Liberty Hill Church & School (unknown)
2/29/2024 GCAK2DE Faithful Partner Revisited (multi)
If this were a challenge, you would be required to find a cache (traditional, multi, mystery, letterbox hybrid, whereigo, earthcache, virtual or webcam, but no events or Adventure Labs) on some specific date (of your choice) for five successive years, or to find a cache (same list) on three successive February 29ths. The list would be so I could check to make sure that your list of finds is accurate. All of the finds can be the same type.
However, this is an Unchallenge. The rules for challenges rule out this particular challenge—one cannot require finds in earlier years (although you could find them over the next five years), one cannot require maintaining a streak beyond 365 days (even though this isn’t, strictly speaking, that type of streak), one cannot require finds on February 29th, and one cannot require more that one find on any day or calendar date, even if cumulative.
So I cannot require you to find a cache on some specific date for five successive years, or to find a cache on three successive February 29ths, but I hope you will play along and do it anyway!
