Paradishellir
Paradise Cave is located in one of the pillow lava layers and is believed to have originated as a magma channel, eventually becoming a gas tunnel.
History
The cave is 7 m long and 3,8 m wide in some places. The walls of the cave are covered with runic and ogham inscriptions and over 20 names can be found there, including the name Steinmóð Bárðarson, a 15th century deacon from the Westman Islands. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact date of these inscriptions, but they are believed to be from before 1600.
There is a famous 16th century story surrounding this cave about a noble woman from a wealthy family, Anna from Stóra Borg and her secret lover Bjarna Hjalta, who used the cave as his hideout for four years. The story has been published in the book "Anna from Stóra Borg" written by Jón Trausta.
The hike
From the old sheep sorting pen "Seljalandsrétt" there is a 700 m walk to the base of the cliff and then a 7 m vertical climb up to the opening of the cave. Chains have been installed to aid in the ascent for the adventurous geocacher.
