Geocache Description:

The James River Bridge, commonly referred to as the JRB, is a 4 ½ mile, 4-lane, divided highway connecting Newport News with Isle of Wight County.  When it was originally completed  in 1928, the JRB was the longest bridge in the world over water.  I remember driving over the original bridge when I was a teenager.  The original two-lane bridge, which was only 20 feet wide from curb to curb and had very low side railings, was replaced between 1975 to 1982 with a wider four-lane highway.

Interesting fact: The original drawspan, which is located about ¼ mile from the Newport News side, had it’s grand opening on  November 17, 1928, when  U.S. President Calvin Coolidge, while in Washington D.C., pressed a button at the White House which sent an electric signal causing the lift span to lower into place.

In order to claim this virtual hide you must go to the posted coordinates and take a selfie of you with the drawspan in the background.  Please include something showing your geocaching name in the picture.  If you do not wish to post your face you may simply show your geocaching name in the picture showing the drawspan in the background.  Example photo below:

Also, just for fun, if you were around long enough ago to remember driving over the original bridge, tell us how it was for you.  As a new driver it was terrifying for me.  But my Dad thought I should experience it at least once.
