History's first and only crewed surface transportation system created to operate on the Moon was designed, tested and built by The Boeing Company for NASA in Kent, Washington; at The Boeing Space Center! Commonly known as the Lunar Rover or Moon Buggy, the four-wheeled vehicles were last used during Apollo missions 15, 16 and 17 between 1971-1972. Three of the Kent-built Lunar Rovers remain on the Moon today and were designated as King County historical landmarks in July 2019 and Washington State historical landmarks in October 2020.
The Lunar Rover Vehicle (LRV) at this location is a replica of the ones sent to the Moon, however the tires on this one are rubber and not the wire mesh on the real vehicles.
The Apollo Lunar Rover Vehicles cost about $38 million in total for all four built (three used on the Moon and, one spare), equivalent to roughly $295 million in today's money, making them the most expensive drivable vehicles at that time.
