Kostel Nejsvětějšího Srdce Páně
Dominanta náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad, kostel Nejsvětějšího Srdce Páně, patří k nejoriginálnějším stavbám Evropy. Když byl v roce 1932 dokončen, vyvolal mezi Pražany úžas i kontroverze. Dnes je považován za vrcholné dílo slovinského architekta Josipa Plečnika, který se proslavil také úpravami Pražského hradu pro T. G. Masaryka.
Architektura s královskou symbolikou
Stavba na první pohled zaujme netradiční fasádou. Tmavé cihly s vystouplými kamennými prvky nejsou jen dekorací, mají připomínat hermelínový plášť, symbol královské moci Krista. Celá budova tak působí jako monumentální panovnický stan.
Největší hodiny v Česku
Nepřehlédnutelným prvkem je široká, plochá věž, do které jsou vsazeny obrovské prosklené hodiny o průměru 7,6 metru. Jsou to největší hodiny v celé České republice. Místo tradičních schodů vede vnitřkem věže unikátní šikmá rampa, která architektovi umožnila zachovat čistotu prostoru.
Interiér, který spojuje
Vnitřek kostela je navržen jako jedna velká hala bez jediného sloupu, aby všichni věřící měli nerušený výhled na oltář. Plečnik zde vsadil na ušlechtilé materiály – bílý mramor, zlato a dřevo. Nad hlavním oltářem se vznášejí sochy českých patronů v nadživotní velikosti (sv. Jan Nepomucký, sv. Anežka, sv. Vojtěch, sv. Václav, sv. Ludmila a sv. Prokop). Dominantou je 3,5 metru vysoká socha Krista z pozlaceného lipového dřeva, která je zavěšena nad hlavním oltářem.
Zajímavost na závěr:
Josip Plečnik za svou práci na kostele odmítl vzít honorář. Považoval to za svou duchovní službu a dar Praze, kterou miloval. Dnes je tato Národní kulturní památka na seznamu kandidátů pro zápis do světového dědictví UNESCO, čímž se řadí mezi globální architektonické poklady.

Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Dominating the square of Jiřího z Poděbrady, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most original buildings in Europe. When it was completed in 1932, it caused both amazement and controversy among the people of Prague. Today, it is considered the masterpiece of Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik, who also became famous for his renovations of Prague Castle for T. G. Masaryk.
Architecture with royal symbolism
At first glance, the building impresses with its unconventional facade. The dark bricks with protruding stone elements are not just decoration, they are meant to resemble the ermine cloak, a symbol of Christ's royal power. The entire building thus appears as a monumental royal tent.
The largest clock in the Czech Republic
An unmissable element is the wide, flat tower, into which a huge glass clock with a diameter of 7.6 meters is set. It is the largest clock in the entire Czech Republic. Instead of traditional stairs, a unique inclined ramp leads through the inside of the tower, which allowed the architect to maintain the purity of the space.
An interior that connects
The interior of the church is designed as one large hall without a single column, so that all believers have an unobstructed view of the altar. Plečnik opted for noble materials here - white marble, gold and wood. Above the main altar, larger-than-life statues of Czech patron saints soar (St. John of Nepomuk, St. Agnes, St. Adalbert, St. Wenceslas, St. Ludmila and St. Procopius). The dominant feature is the 3.5-meter-high statue of Christ made of gilded linden wood, which is hung above the main altar.
Interesting fact in conclusion:
Josip Plečnik refused to accept a fee for his work on the church. He considered it his spiritual service and a gift to Prague, which he loved. Today, this National Cultural Monument is on the list of candidates for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which makes it one of the global architectural treasures.
