Godzilla, the King of the Monsters
Created in 1954 by Toho Co., Ltd., Godzilla (ゴジラ / Gojira) has become one of the most iconic characters in world cinema.
Born in the original film Godzilla, directed by Ishirō Honda, the monster served as a powerful metaphor for post-war nuclear fears in Japan. Awakened and mutated by atomic testing, Godzilla embodies destruction, the overwhelming force of nature, and—over the decades—an ambiguous role as protector.
For more than 70 years, he has battled countless creatures—Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla—and evolved through different cinematic eras, shifting from apocalyptic threat to towering guardian of Japan.
The Yurakucho Statue
In the heart of the modern Hibiya district, this Godzilla statue appears to emerge between the buildings. Standing about 3 meters tall, it depicts the kaiju in a dynamic pose, mouth open, ready to unleash his atomic breath.
Installed near Toho’s offices (whose historic headquarters are located in the neighboring district), it pays tribute to the monster’s cinematic birth and cultural legacy.
Here, the contrast is striking: the destructive titan now peacefully watches over an elegant neighborhood filled with theaters, cinemas, and skyscrapers.

怪獣王ゴジラ
1954年、東宝株式会社によって生み出されたゴジラ（ゴジラ / Gojira）は、世界映画史上最も象徴的なキャラクターの一つとなりました。
本多猪四郎監督によるオリジナル映画『ゴジラ』において、この怪獣は戦後日本の核への恐怖を象徴する強力なメタファーとして描かれました。核実験によって目覚め、突然変異を起こしたゴジラは、破壊そのもの、そして圧倒的な自然の力を体現しています。そして時代とともに、時には守護者という曖昧な立場も担うようになりました。
70年以上にわたり、モスラ、キングギドラ、メカゴジラなど数え切れない怪獣と戦いながら、映画の時代ごとに進化を遂げ、終末的な脅威から日本を守る巨大な守護者へとその姿を変えてきました。
有楽町のゴジラ像
現代的な日比谷エリアの中心に立つこのゴジラ像は、ビルの間から現れたかのように見えます。高さ約3メートルで、口を開け、今にも放射熱線を放とうとする躍動感あふれる姿が表現されています。
東宝のオフィス（歴史的な本社は隣接する地区に所在）の近くに設置されたこの像は、ゴジラの映画史における誕生とその文化的遺産へのオマージュです。
かつて破壊の象徴であった巨大な怪獣が、今では劇場や映画館、高層ビルが立ち並ぶ洗練された街並みを静かに見守っています。その対比は非常に印象的です。

Né dans le film original Godzilla, réalisé par Ishirō Honda, le monstre a servi de puissante métaphore des peurs nucléaires du Japon d’après-guerre. Réveillé et muté par des essais atomiques, Godzilla incarne la destruction, la force irrésistible de la nature et, au fil des décennies, un rôle ambigu de protecteur.
Depuis plus de 70 ans, il a affronté d’innombrables créatures — Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla — et a évolué à travers différentes ères cinématographiques, passant de menace apocalyptique à gardien colossal du Japon.
La statue de Yurakucho
Au cœur du quartier moderne de Hibiya, cette statue de Godzilla semble surgir entre les immeubles. Haute d’environ 3 mètres, elle représente le kaijū dans une posture dynamique, la gueule ouverte, prêt à libérer son souffle atomique.
Installée à proximité des bureaux de Toho (dont le siège historique se trouve dans le quartier voisin), elle rend hommage à la naissance cinématographique du monstre et à son héritage culturel.
Ici, le contraste est frappant : le titan destructeur veille désormais paisiblement sur un quartier élégant composé de théâtres, de cinémas et de gratte-ciel.
