Porten til Ishavet
Mosaikkskulpturen «Porten til Ishavet» ble avduket 7. september 2024. Den er 6 meter høy og er plassert ved Tromsøbrua slik at Ishavskatedralen kan ses gjennom skulpturens buede åpning. Man kan også se Tromsdalstinden gjennom den. Glasset i mosaikken er hentet fra en berømt mosaikkfabrikk i Venezia i Italia, Orsoni Venezia 1888.
Kunstneren Marit Bockelie var fast bestemt på at kunstverket skulle hete «Porten til Ishavet», med bakgrunn i at Tromsø er og har alltid vært Ishavsbyen – med fangstfolk og forskere og alle ekspedisjonene. Alle var innom Tromsø for å ruste opp og innhente kunnskap før de dro videre nordover. Det var det vi var kjent for, og det er derfor jeg har kalt skulpturen «Porten til Ishavet» sier Bockelie i et intervju med avisa iTromsø.
Marit Bockelie er født i 1933, og var altså 91 år når kunstverket stod ferdig. Hun har utdannelse både innenfor musikk og kunst, og er både grafiker, tegner, maler, illustratør og musiker. Hun har særlig markert seg med verk i mosaikk-teknikk, og flere av hennes mosaikker kan ses på forskjellige vegger i Tromsø. Som landskapsskildrer er hun mest opptatt av den nordnorske naturen, men hun søker også inspirasjon i folkesagn og folkemusikk. Hun har utdannelse fra Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole før hun studerte mosaikk ved Accedemia di Bella Arti i Ravenna i Italia.

The Gateway to the Arctic
The mosaic sculpture “The Gateway to the Arctic” was unveiled on 7 September 2024. It stands 6 meters tall and is placed near the Tromsø Bridge so that the Arctic Cathedral can be seen through the sculpture’s curved opening. Tromsdalstinden is also visible through it. The glass used in the mosaic comes from the renowned mosaic factory Orsoni Venezia 1888 in Venice, Italy.
The artist Marit Bockelie was determined that the artwork should be called “The Gateway to the Arctic Ocean”, based on the idea that Tromsø is—and always has been—the Arctic Ocean City, home to hunters, researchers, and countless expeditions. Everyone passed through Tromsø to prepare and gather knowledge before heading further north. “That was what we were known for, and that is why I have named the sculpture ‘The Gateway to the Arctic Ocean’,” Bockelie said in an interview with the newspaper iTromsø.
Marit Bockelie was born in 1933 and was therefore 91 years old when the artwork was completed. She is educated in both music and art, and works as a graphic artist, illustrator, painter, draftsman, and musician. She is particularly known for her work in mosaic techniques, and several of her mosaics can be seen on various buildings in Tromsø. As a landscape artist, she is especially drawn to the nature of Northern Norway, but she also finds inspiration in folk tales and folk music. She studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry before continuing her mosaic studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Ravenna, Italy.
