Dolly Rebecca Parton[ was born on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River] in Pittman Center Tennessee.
Dolly grew up in a humble family as one of twelve children in a small one-bedroom home nestled in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Dolly consistently drew inspiration throughout her career from her immense appreciation and love for the place and people that raised her. She lived a simple childhood chasing the beauty of butterflies, listening to Appalachian folklore and ancient ballads passed down by her relatives. Huddling around the family radio to hear the Grand Ole Opry broadcast, Dolly and her siblings would joyfully make music together. From an early age, Dolly’s musical talent was evident and encouraged by her mother – crafting simple songs on her guitar that were seemingly pulled from the spirit of the Smoky Mountains themselves. Dolly took notice of the attention her music got from everyone around her and knew then she was meant to share her heart and talent with the world. She began writing songs at the age of five, the first being about a corncob doll her mother made for her called “Little Tiny Tasseltop.” While she couldn’t read or write at this point, her mother wrote down the lyrics as the knee-high Dolly sang them.

- Dolly Parton's Imagination Library: Founded in 1995 in honor of her illiterate father, this flagship program has mailed over 300 million free books to children under the age of five across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia to encourage early literacy. Children enrolled in The Imagination Library would receive a total of 60 free books if they stay in the program from birth until their fifth birthday,
- The Dollywood Foundation: Launched in 1988, this foundation initially targeted high school dropout rates in Sevier County, Tennessee, successfully lowering the rate from 35% to just 6% by offering cash incentives to graduates. It also provides ongoing $15,000 college scholarships to local students.
- My People Fund (2016 Wildfires): When wildfires ravaged the Great Smoky Mountains, her fund provided $1,000 a month for six months in direct, unconditional cash to every family who lost their home, ultimately distributing over $12 million in relief
- Hurricane Helene Relief (2024): Parton personally donated $1 million to the Mountain Ways Foundation to aid flood victims in East Tennessee, a donation matched by another $1 million from her Dollywood businesses
- Pediatric Care & Hospitals: She has routinely donated millions to children's health, including a $1 million gift to pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital. Her transformational support led to East Tennessee Children's Hospital being renamed Dolly Parton’s Children’s Hospital
- Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Funding: In 2020, Parton made a $1 million donation to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This critical "seed money" directly supported research that led to the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Dolly was hospitalized at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville TN, on August 21, 2026 and died after a "brief battle" with cancer on August 25, at age 80
