Die Horner Mühle
Die Horner Mühle wurde im Jahre 1849 als Galerieholländer erbaut. Sie gehört zusammen mit den anderen Bremer Windmühlen am Wall, in Oberneuland und Arbergen zu den wenigen erhaltenen Baudenkmälern ihrer Art, die von der früheren landwirtschaftlichen Prägung in den Stadtteilen zeugen.
Durch Heirat der Müllerstochter wurde Lür Kaemena, Großvater des heutigen Eigentümers, Besitzer der Windmühle. Die Familie Kaemena entstammt dem Kreis holländischer Neusiedler, die im 18. Jahrhundert zur Kultivierung des versumpften Hollerlandes angeworben wurden.
Betrieb per Dampfmaschine
Bereits gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde zum Betrieb der Mühle eine Dampfmaschine angeschafft. Mit der Weiterentwicklung des Betriebs entschieden sich die Müller aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen schon früh für einen Dieselantrieb.
1933 drehten sich die alten Flügel der Mühle zum letzten Mal. Rund 30 Jahre waren sie alt und dank robuster Bauart leidlich erhalten. Allerdings war der Bock nicht mehr fest genug, sodass der Eigentümer die Flügel vorsichtshalber abmontieren ließ. Auf dem Steinboden der Mühle befanden sich vier Mahlsteine mit einem Durchmesser von jeweils 1,80 Meter. Die Mahlleistung betrug im Dauerbetrieb eine Tonne pro Stunde.
Im oberen hölzernen Achtkant befand sich ein Silo für Gerste, das täglich nachgefüllt wurde. Vom ehemaligen Mühlenantrieb sind bis heute die Flügelwelle, das Achsrad, die Königswelle und das Stirnrad erhalten. Nach dem Bau der Mühle wurde die Kappe anfangs mit Hilfe des Steerts in den Wind gestellt. Später wurde auch diese Mühle auf eine Windrose umgerüstet. In der Folgezeit erhielt die Mühle im Zuge der technischen Entwicklung Jalousieflügel. 1927 wurden im unteren Mühlenteil eine moderne Futtermischmaschine sowie Geräte zur Getreidereinigung sowie eine Beizanlage eingebaut.
Die Horner Mühle wurde im 20. Jahrhundert weitgehend als Familienbetrieb geführt. 1936 übernahm Johann Kaemena die Betriebsführung. Der jetzige Müllermeister Lür Kaemena sah nach mehr als 30 Jahren Tätigkeit als Müllermeister keine Zukunft mehr. Aufgrund der niedrigen Preise im Futtermittelhandel stellte er den Betrieb auf Kleinhandel mit Tierfutter, Saat und Gartenbedarf um.
1955 gab es erstmals öffentliche Diskussionen über die äußere Restaurierung der Windmühle. Die Kosten für den Abbruch des Achtkantoberteils beliefen sich damals auf umgerechnet rund 15000 Euro. Gleichzeitig veränderte sich im Zuge städtischer und privater Baumaßnahmen das Umfeld der Mühle gravierend. Im Juli 1966 wurde das alte Müllerhaus abgerissen. Ein neues Wohnhaus entstand auf dem hinteren Teil des Mühlengeländes. Auf dem Grundstück des Müllerhauses wurde eine Tankstelle gebaut. An der anderen Seite grenzte die Mühle inzwischen an die modernen Gebäude der Telekom.
Gerade diese Veränderungen rückten die Mühle wieder stärker in das Blickfeld des Stadtteils. Das Interesse an einer Restaurierung wuchs. Durch den Bürgerverein Horn-Lehe und eine umfangreiche Berichterstattung im Weser-Kurier wurde erfolgreich an die Spendenbereitschaft der Bürger appelliert. Die Kosten für die Arbeiten in Höhe von umgerechnet mehr als 50000 Euro wurden 1967 durch Spenden und städtische Zuschüsse aufgebracht. Mit dem Geld wurden der Mühlenkopf ausgebessert sowie der Neubau von Galerie, Windrose und Flügel bezahlt. Im Dezember 1968 gingen die neuen Flügel offiziell in Betrieb. Außerdem wurde die Mühle bei Dunkelheit angestrahlt.
Weitere Renovierungsarbeiten folgten 1990. Bei einem Sturm 1995 brach ein Flügel. Das defekte Teil wurde abgenommen. Bei der Untersuchung der Kappe fand man überwiegend marode Balken. Der obere Teil der Mühle war in einem desolaten Zustand. Am 23. Januar 1996 gründete sich ein 'Förderverein zur Erhaltung der Horner Mühle'. Er sah seine Aufgabe darin, erneut Spenden zu sammeln. Vereinsvorsitzender wurde Dieter Gerdes, bis vor Kurzem Vorsitzender des Bürgervereins.
1996 wurde die Kappe abgebaut und restauriert. Im folgenden Jahr konnten auch die sanierten Flügel wieder montiert werden. Die Königswelle und das Stirnrad können allerdings auch zukünftig nicht funktionsfähig gerichtet werden, weil moderne Maschinen und Zuleitungsrohre den Zugang blockieren. Die Kappe ist bis auf wenige Teile ein Neubau. Alle tragenden Kappenbalken mussten neu angefertigt werden. Der stählerne Windrosengetriebebock wurde renoviert, das Getriebe überarbeitet und die Windrose neu gebaut. Starke Veränderungen
wurden bei den Flügeln vorgenommen. Aus Sicherheits- und Wartungsgründen ist man von den bisherigen Holzruten abgegangen. Die Mühlenbauer fertigten nach den Holzprofilen der alten Ruten eine Neukonstruktion aus Stahl an.
Nach der weitgehenden Restaurierung erfüllt die Horner Mühle wieder ihre Funktion - ein schmuckes Wahrzeichen für den Stadtteil zu sein. In der nächsten Folge am Montag, 25. Oktober, geht es um die Entwicklung des Verkehrs und der Straßenbahnlinien in Horn-Lehe.

The Horner Mill
Horn-Lehe. The Horner Mill was built in 1849 as a Dutch gallery mill. Together with the other Bremen windmills on the Wall, in Oberneuland, and Arbergen, it is one of the few remaining monuments of its kind that bear witness to the former agricultural character of these districts.
Through marriage to the miller's daughter, Lür Kaemena, grandfather of the current owner, became the owner of the windmill. The Kaemena family comes from a group of Dutch settlers who were recruited in the 18th century to cultivate the marshy Hollerland.
Operation by steam engine
A steam engine was purchased to operate the mill as early as the end of the 19th century. As the business developed, the millers decided early on to switch to diesel power for economic reasons.
In 1933, the old blades of the mill turned for the last time. They were around 30 years old and, thanks to their robust construction, were still in reasonably good condition. However, the trestle was no longer stable enough, so the owner had the blades removed as a precaution. On the stone floor of the mill were four millstones, each with a diameter of 1.80 meters. The grinding capacity was one ton per hour in continuous operation.
The upper wooden octagon contained a silo for barley, which was refilled daily. The wing shaft, axle wheel, king shaft, and spur gear from the former mill drive have been preserved to this day. After the mill was built, the cap was initially set to face the wind with the help of the tail. Later, this mill was also converted to a wind rose. In the following years, the mill was equipped with louvered wings as part of technical developments. In 1927, a modern feed mixing machine, grain cleaning equipment, and a pickling plant were installed in the lower part of the mill.
The Horner Mill was largely run as a family business in the 20th century. In 1936, Johann Kaemena took over the management of the business. After more than 30 years as a master miller, the current master miller, Lür Kaemena, saw no future in the business. Due to low prices in the feed trade, he converted the business to retail sales of animal feed, seeds, and gardening supplies.
In 1955, there were public discussions for the first time about the external restoration of the windmill. The cost of demolishing the octagonal upper section amounted to the equivalent of around 15,000 euros at the time. At the same time, the mill's surroundings changed dramatically in the course of urban and private construction projects. In July 1966, the old miller's house was demolished. A new residential building was constructed at the rear of the mill grounds. A gas station was built on the site of the miller's house. On the other side, the mill now bordered the modern Telekom buildings.
It was precisely these changes that brought the mill back into the spotlight in the district. Interest in restoration grew. The Horn-Lehe citizens' association and extensive coverage in the Weser-Kurier newspaper successfully appealed to the citizens' willingness to donate. The costs for the work, amounting to the equivalent of more than 50,000 euros, were covered in 1967 by donations and municipal subsidies. The money was used to repair the mill head and pay for the new construction of the gallery, wind rose, and sails. In December 1968, the new sails were officially put into operation. In addition, the mill was illuminated at night.
Further renovation work followed in 1990. During a storm in 1995, one of the sails broke. The defective part was removed. Upon inspection of the cap, it was found that most of the beams were rotten. The upper part of the mill was in a desolate condition. On January 23, 1996, a “Friends of Horner Mill Association” was founded. Its mission was to collect donations once again. Dieter Gerdes, until recently chairman of the citizens' association, became chairman of the association.
In 1996, the cap was dismantled and restored. The following year, the renovated sails were also reinstalled. However, the king shaft and spur gear cannot be repaired to a functional state in the future because modern machines and supply pipes block access. The cap is a new construction except for a few parts. All load-bearing cap beams had to be remade. The steel wind rose gear rack was renovated, the gearbox was overhauled, and the wind rose was rebuilt. Significant changes
were made to the blades. For safety and maintenance reasons, the previous wooden rods were discarded. The mill builders created a new steel construction based on the wooden profiles of the old rods.
Following extensive restoration, the Horner Mill is once again fulfilling its function as a decorative landmark for the district. The next episode on Monday, October 25, will focus on the development of transportation and tram lines in Horn-Lehe.
