🇩🇪 Das märchenhafte Schloss Löwenburg
Hoch über Kassel erhebt sich eine Burg, die wirkt, als stamme sie direkt aus dem Mittelalter – und doch ist sie ein Werk der Romantik.
Die Löwenburg ist ein ab 1793 erbautes Lustschloss im Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. Zwischen 1793 und 1801 entstand sie nach Entwürfen des Hofarchitekten Heinrich Christoph Jussow im Auftrag von Landgraf Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel, der später als Kurfürst Wilhelm I. bekannt wurde.
Die Anlage wurde bewusst als künstliche mittelalterliche Burgruine errichtet und gilt kunstgeschichtlich als eines der frühesten bedeutenden Bauwerke der Neugotik in Deutschland. Gleichzeitig zählt sie zu den wenigen Lustschlössern in einem Residenzpark, die in diesem Stil erbaut wurden.
Ursprünglich nur als ruinöser Turm geplant, entwickelte sich das Projekt zu einer vollständigen Höhenburg mit Innenhof, Wohngebäuden, Kapelle und Bergfried.
Die Löwenburg diente dem Landgrafen als privater Rückzugsort. Gemeinsam mit seiner Mätresse Karoline von Schlotheim residierte er hier fern des höfischen Alltags. Nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1821 wurde er in der Gruft unter der neugotischen Schlosskapelle beigesetzt.
Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau
Am 22. Oktober 1943 wurde Kassel bei einem schweren Luftangriff massiv zerstört. Auch die Löwenburg erlitt schwere Schäden. Der Bergfried wurde weitgehend zerstört, zahlreiche Gebäudeteile stark beschädigt.
Der Wiederaufbau erfolgte zunächst funktional. Zwischen 2005 und 2022 wurde die Anlage umfassend restauriert, der Bergfried vollständig rekonstruiert und wieder begehbar gemacht. Seit Juli 2022 ist die Löwenburg nach der großen Sanierung wieder vollständig zugänglich.
Nordwestlich erhebt sich eines der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen Kassels – der monumentale Herkules.

🇬🇧 The Fairytale Castle Löwenburg
High above Kassel rises a castle that appears to come straight from the Middle Ages – and yet it is a creation of the Romantic era.
Löwenburg is a pleasure palace built from 1793 onwards in Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. Between 1793 and 1801 it was constructed according to designs by court architect Heinrich Christoph Jussow, commissioned by Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel, who later became Elector Wilhelm I.
The complex was deliberately designed as an artificial medieval castle ruin and is considered one of the earliest and most significant examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Germany. At the same time, it is one of the very few pleasure palaces within a residential park built in this style.
Originally planned as only a ruined tower, the project evolved into a complete hilltop castle with an inner courtyard, residential buildings, a chapel, and a keep.
The Löwenburg served as the Landgrave’s private retreat. Together with his mistress Karoline von Schlotheim, he resided here far from courtly life. After his death in 1821, he was buried in the crypt beneath the Neo-Gothic castle chapel.
Destruction and Reconstruction
On October 22, 1943, Kassel was heavily destroyed during a massive air raid. The Löwenburg also suffered severe damage. The keep was largely destroyed, and many parts of the complex were badly damaged.
The initial reconstruction was carried out in a functional manner. Between 2005 and 2022, the entire complex underwent extensive restoration. The keep was fully reconstructed and made accessible again. Since July 2022, the Löwenburg has been completely open to visitors following the major renovation.
To the northwest rises one of Kassel’s most famous landmarks – the monumental Herkules (Kassel).
