Fondée en 1010, l’abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes surplombe la vallée de la Sarthe, à proximité de Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Après avoir traversé les siècles, connu les troubles de la Révolution française puis une renaissance au XIXe siècle sous l’impulsion de Dom Prosper Guéranger, elle est aujourd’hui l’un des principaux centres bénédictins de France.
Toujours habitée par une communauté de moines, l’abbaye vit au rythme de la règle de saint Benoît : prière, travail et accueil. Elle est particulièrement réputée pour son patrimoine artistique exceptionnel, notamment les célèbres “Saints de Solesmes”, ensembles sculptés du XVe siècle d’une grande finesse. Parmi eux, la Mise au tombeau du Christ et la Mise au tombeau de la Vierge constituent des œuvres majeures de l’art religieux français.
Dominant la rivière Sarthe, l’abbaye s’intègre harmonieusement dans le paysage, offrant depuis le pont de Solesmes un point de vue remarquable sur l’ensemble du site.

About the location
Founded in 1010, the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes overlooks the Sarthe Valley near Sablé-sur-Sarthe in western France. After centuries of history, including destruction during the French Revolution and a revival in the 19th century under Dom Prosper Guéranger, it became one of the major Benedictine centers in France.
The abbey is still home to a community of monks who live according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, balancing prayer, work, and hospitality. Solesmes is internationally known for its remarkable religious sculptures known as the “Saints of Solesmes.” These 15th-century masterpieces are considered outstanding examples of medieval sacred art. Among them, the Entombment of Christ and the Entombment of the Virgin are particularly notable for their artistic refinement and expressive detail.
Overlooking the Sarthe River, the abbey blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. From the Solesmes bridge, visitors can enjoy one of the most iconic views of the entire site.

À l’intérieur de l’église abbatiale, allez observer les Saints de Solesmes dans les deux trasepts:
Repérez le prénom féminin inscrit sur l'un des deux tombeaux.

Merci de rester discret et respectueux pendant votre visite. L'église est ouverte de 9h30 à 18h15, mais fermée pendant les offices.
2️⃣ Photo dans la cour de l’église abbatiale
À l’intérieur de la cour de l'abbaye (et pas dans l'église abbatiale) :
Prenez une photo de l'extérieur de l'église, avec l'horloge .
La photo doit montrer clairement l'horloge et doit inclure un élément distinctif personnel (objet, geste spécifique, pancarte avec votre pseudo, visage, etc.).
Merci de rester discret et respectueux pendant la prise de vue et de vous conformer aux éventuelles règles affichées sur place.
3️⃣ Photo depuis le pont de Solesmes
Prenez une photo depuis le Pont de Solesmes (dessus ou dessous) incluant un élément distinctif personnel (objet, geste spécifique, pancarte avec votre pseudo, visage, etc.) avec l'Abbaye clairement visible et identifiable en arrière-plan et un élément du pont (rambarde ou arche). Soyez créatifs.
Important
Les deux photos doivent être jointes à votre log et la réponse envoyée par mail ou messagerie geocaching.
Tout log ne respectant pas ces conditions pourra être supprimé.

1️⃣ Visit inside the abbey church
Inside the abbey church, go and observe the Saints of Solesmes located in the two transepts.
Find the female first name written on one of the two tombs.

Please remain discreet and respectful during your visit.
The church is open from 9:30 AM to 6:15 PM, but it is closed during religious services.
2️⃣ Photo in the abbey courtyard
Inside the abbey courtyard (not inside the church):
Take a photo of the outside of the church including the clock.
The photo must clearly show the clock and include a personal distinctive element (object, specific gesture, sign with your username, your face, etc.).
Please remain discreet and respectful while taking the photo and follow any posted rules on site.
3️⃣ Photo from the Solesmes bridge
Take a photo from the Solesmes Bridge (either above or below it) including a personal distinctive element (object, specific gesture, sign with your username, your face, etc.).
The abbey must be clearly visible and identifiable in the background, and the photo must also include an element of the bridge (railing or arch).
Be creative!
Important
Both photos must be attached to your log, and the answer must be sent by email or through the Geocaching messaging system.
Any log that does not meet these requirements may be deleted.
