GPSpenst im Schönbusch

Jump to the 🇬🇧 english listing

Beteiligt waren u. a.

Bitte erstellt keine Collagen!

🇬🇧 English listing

Schönbusch Park

Schönbusch Park in Aschaffenburg is one of the earliest landscape gardens in southern Germany. Beginning in 1775, Elector Friedrich Carl von Erthal had the former game reserve transformed into a landscape park: with artificial lakes and waterways, raised hills and a curved circular path. Among those involved were Count Wilhelm von Sickingen and the architect Emanuel d’Herigoyen.

By 1788/89, numerous park buildings and decorative elements had been created, such as the village, shepherd houses, Temple of Friendship, Philosopher’s House, observation tower, dining hall and the Red Bridge. For the completion of the park, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell was brought in no later than 1783, implementing English design principles comprehensively in a newly created park for the first time. Schönbusch is therefore considered one of the most significant landscape gardens in Germany.

Today, cattle grazing year-round around the village support the rural-idyllic atmosphere. The former kitchen building now houses a visitor center with the exhibition “Everything Seems Nature,” which presents the history of the park.

The Tasks

The little ghost used to be called “GPSpenst,” but even he could never remember that name. So he simply forgot it and has called himself the little ghost ever since. That fits better — and maybe he can remember that one … most of the time anyway. 👻✨

The little ghost loves Schönbusch, but unfortunately he is very forgetful and at the end of his strolls he no longer knows where he has been.

  1. Task: Help him rediscover six significant places in the park and capture each of these locations with a photo.
Important: A little ghost must be visible in each photo — whether crafted, drawn, as a plush figure or dressed up. There are no limits to your imagination. 👻
The photos should be taken from close to the specified location and not from a greater distance. Indications for the appropriate photo locations are the listed coordinates and/or the sample photos.

    The six significant places:
    • The Orangery
The orangery in Schönbusch Park dates from the late 18th century and originally served to overwinter sensitive potted plants such as orange and lemon trees. Buildings like this were a sign of prosperity and belonged to representative park complexes of that time. Today, it is a striking architectural feature of the park.
The little ghost once tried to count the oranges here, but at “one, two, many” he was distracted again. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.705' E 009° 06.465' (Alternatively, if access to the courtyard is not possible: N 49° 57.718' E 009° 06.485')
    • The Maze
The maze in Schönbusch Park is classically designed as a hedge labyrinth and reflects a popular design element of historic park layouts. In the 18th and 19th centuries, such mazes served as entertainment and were intended to guide visitors playfully through winding paths. Here, the garden art combines with enjoyment and a bit of a sense of direction too.
In the maze, the little ghost is never quite sure whether he is looking for the exit or has just lost it again. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.705' E 009° 06.419'
    • The Observation Tower
The observation tower in Schönbusch Park is a typical design element of the English landscape garden. Such towers were deliberately erected as vantage points and provided wide views over the park landscape and its carefully composed sightlines. They combined the experience of nature with architectural emphasis.
Once at the top, even the little ghost is briefly speechless — only to immediately wonder from which direction he actually floated up. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.719' E 009° 06.297'
    • The Devil’s Bridge
The Devil’s Bridge is a deliberately “romantically” staged feature within the park. Bridges and streams like this were very popular in landscape gardens because they create an atmospheric connection between nature and architecture. They were often positioned as eye-catchers to make walks more varied. The name plays more with atmosphere than with actual “devilry.”
The little ghost thinks the name is fantastic, but the question “why devil?” he unfortunately forgets every single time once he has crossed it. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.692' E 009° 06.274'
    • Schönbusch Palace
Schönbusch Palace was built in the late 18th century in the classical style. It was part of the English landscape park created under Elector and Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal. The palace served as a summer residence and still forms the architectural center of the park today.
The little ghost often stops by here, but sometimes forgets that this building is the heart of the park.
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.708' E 009° 06.160'
    • The Red Bridge
The Red Bridge is a characteristic design element of Schönbusch landscape park. With its striking color, it sets a deliberate accent within the natural surroundings and connects two areas of the park. Decorative bridges like this were a popular means in English landscape gardens to create varied paths and sightlines.
The little ghost likes the red color. Even for him, it is hard to miss … most of the time anyway. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.872' E 009° 06.181'

  2. Task: Take a photo of the Temple of Friendship.
Important: So that the little ghost knows which friend helped him, your GC name (for example written on paper) must be visible in this photo.

    • The Temple of Friendship
The Temple of Friendship is a classical round temple and a typical ornamental element of the English landscape garden. Such temple structures symbolized ideals such as friendship, harmony, and connection. With its open construction, it blends harmoniously into the surrounding park landscape and forms a peaceful focal point.
Friendship means remembering — because you are not alone. 👻
      Coordinates: N 49° 57.630' E 009° 05.999'

Once all seven photos (six significant places and the Temple of Friendship) are available, the little ghost is happy again (and you may log with the photos).

Please do not create collages!

Logs without the required 7 pictures (individually and not as a collage) will be deleted without comment!

Behavior in Schönbusch Park

Physical caches are not permitted in Schönbusch Park. The publication of this virtual cache has been agreed with the "Bavarian Administration of State-Owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes". It is strongly recommended that cachers comply with the park regulations (Available only in German).

Logging

We enjoy reading your logs, especially when you give us some of your valuable free time to write them.
We do our best to create unique caches.
Logs with the same story copied and pasted into many caches, or that consist mainly of meaningless characters and other trivialities, certainly make us a little sad - and not just us.
Every owner (and we are no exception) appreciates having their work acknowledged through nice logs. It is the only appreciation you get for placing good caches. Only this way will there continue to be great caches in the future and not just 08/15 caches.
