Le square Mariette rend hommage au célèbre égyptologue boulonnais, figé dans le bronze et qui, du haut de cette pyramide, contemple la ville qui l’a vu naître en 1821. Auguste Mariette (1821-1881) est l’un de ces grands érudits qui ont fait honneur à leur ville natale au 19e siècle. Découvreur de sites archéologiques majeurs en Egypte et fervent opposant à la dilapidation du patrimoine égyptien, Auguste Mariette est le fondateur du musée du Caire, devant lequel il est enterré. Savant et homme de lettres, il est aussi l’auteur du livret du célèbre opéra Aïda, composé par Verdi. Une réplique de la barque funéraire et solaire du pharaon Khéops complète depuis 2004 cet environnement commémoratif et végétal explicite.

Mariette Square pays homage to the renowned Egyptologist from Boulogne, immortalized in bronze, who, from atop this pyramid, contemplates the city of his birth in 1821. Auguste Mariette (1821-1881) is one of those great scholars who brought honor to their hometown in the 19th century. Discoverer of major archaeological sites in Egypt and a fervent opponent of the squandering of Egyptian heritage, Auguste Mariette founded the Cairo Museum, in front of which he is buried. A scholar and man of letters, he also wrote the libretto for the famous opera Aida, composed by Verdi. A replica of the funerary and solar barque of Pharaoh Khufu has completed this commemorative and verdant setting since 2004
