Your task is to take a photo of yourself or an item belonging to you near the cottage so that the building is clearly recognizable in the picture. Kaarle Akseli Gottlund (alkup. Carl Axel Gottlund) syntyi Ruotsinpyhtäällä 24.2.1796 ja kuoli Helsingissä 20.4.1875. Elinaikanaan hän oli merkittävimpiä suomen kielen pioneerejä ja kansanperinteen kerääjiä. Siviilissä hän työskenteli myös lehtimiehenä ja suomen kielen lehtorina. Suomen kielen kehittämisessä Gottlund vaali savolaismurteita.
Äidinkieleltään ruotsinkielinen Gottlund oppi suomen kielen Juvalla, jonne hän muutti hieman alle 10-vuotiaana isänsä Matthias Gottlund aloitettua työnsä Juvan seurakunnan kirkkoherrana. Edessäsi oleva tupa on ainoa Gottlundin perheen asuttaman pappilan pihapiiriin kuuluneista rakennuksista, joka on edelleen olemassa.
Tiedonjanoinen nuori Carl Axel opiskeli mm. Turun akatemiassa (myöh. Turun yliopisto), jossa kansallisromantiikasta innostuneena hän ryhtyi keräämään kansanperinnettä. Pappilan pihapiirissä ja juuri edessäsi olevan tuvan portailla nuoren Gottlundin kerrotaan laulattaneen paikallisia runonlaulajia. Hän keräsi kansanperinnettä Juvan seudulta niin paljon, että muut kansanperinteenkerääjät, kuten muun muassa muuan Elias Lönnrot, jättivät seudun väliin. Gottlund ideoi kansalliseepoksen toteuttamista keräämisensä runojen pohjalta, ja tämän idean juuri Lönnrot toteutti myöhemmin Kalevalassa.
Nykyisessä suomen kielessä Gottlundin käsiala näkyy hänen luomissaan uudissanoissa, joita ovat mm. huutokauppa, kansalainen, opisto, kirjasto, papisto, puistikko ja rahasto.

Kaarle Akseli Gottlund (originally Carl Axel Gottlund) was born in Ruotsinpyhtää on February 24, 1796, and died in Helsinki on April 20, 1875. During his lifetime, he was one of the most important pioneers of the Finnish language and collectors of folklore. In his professional life, he also worked as a journalist and as a lecturer of Finnish. In developing the Finnish language, Gottlund promoted the Savonian dialects.
Although Swedish was his native language, Gottlund learned Finnish in Juva, where he moved just before turning ten, after his father, Matthias Gottlund, began his work as the parish priest of Juva. The cottage in front of you is the only remaining building from the parsonage yard where the Gottlund family once lived.
The curious young Carl Axel studied, among other places, at the Academy of Turku (later the University of Turku). Inspired by national romanticism, he began collecting folklore. It is said that in the yard of the parsonage and on the steps of the cottage right in front of you, the young Gottlund encouraged local singers to perform traditional poetry. He collected so much folklore from the Juva region that other collectors, including Elias Lönnrot, largely bypassed the area. Gottlund also came up with the idea of creating a national epic based on collected poems—an idea later realized by Lönnrot in the Kalevala.
In modern Finnish, Gottlund’s influence can be seen in the new words he coined, including huutokauppa (auction), kansalainen (citizen), opisto (institute), kirjasto (library), papisto (clergy), puistikko (small park), and rahasto (fund).
