The Nebelhorn (2224 m)
The Nebelhorn is a 2224 meter high mountain in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf. Its summit can be reached via cable car and is famous for its view to 400 other summits.
Your Task
- Take a photo of yourself or a personal item on the summit of the Nebelhorn and upload it with your log.
- Be creative. Of course you can upload the "usual" photo in front of the summit cross, but any photo clearly on the summit area is okay, e.g., the Nordwandsteig or the entrance to the Hindelanger Klettersteig (via ferrata).
- Some ideas: Give the summit of the Großer Daumen ("Great Thumb") a Thumps Up 👍 or recreate the James Bond Gun Barrel Sequence in the tunnel to the Nordwandsteig.
- At the summit cross you can find two small metal plaques. On the left one someone from the city of Esslingen left his greetings. Please send me the text of the last line of this plaque via message center or e-mail.
- ♿ While the summit station and Nordwandsteig are wheelchair accessable, this is not valid for the summit cross. If you cannot access the summit cross, please inform me about this in the message center and you may log without the second task.
Access
The easiest way to reach the cache or the summit is by taking the Nebelhorn Cable Car. The cable car consists of three sections and climbs 1,385 metres in elevation from the outskirts of Oberstdorf to the summit station, which is located just a few metres below the summit cross.
Of course, the Nebelhorn can also be climbed on foot. The easiest hiking route starts at the Oybele Hall in Oberstdorf and follows the Tobel Trail, more or less beneath the cable car, passing the Seealpe and Höfatsblick stations before reaching the summit.
Paid parking is available directly at the Nebelhorn Cable Car station, as well as at the nearby Ice Sports Centre and Oybele Hall. If you are travelling by public transport, you can take the Ring Bus from Oberstdorf railway station to the Nebelhorn Cable Car stop (this bus line accepts the Germany Ticket).
Sights and Activities
From the summit of the Nebelhorn, you can enjoy a spectacular 360° panoramic view of more than 400 Alpine peaks. One of the newer attractions is the Nordwandsteig, a steel-grating walkway located just a few metres below the summit. It extends above a 600-metre cliff, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding mountain landscape. The summit station also features a restaurant with breathtaking panoramic views. Both the summit station and the Nordwandsteig are fully accessible.
After taking in the views, a variety of other (alpine) activities are available from the Nebelhorn. Probably the best known is the Hindelanger Klettersteig, a challenging via ferrata that starts directly at the summit station and traverses the two Wengenköpfe peaks before reaching the Großer Daumen. This route is suitable only for properly equipped and experienced mountaineers.
For hikers, there are several excellent alternatives. You can descend via the two Gaisalp Lakes back to Oberstdorf, or hike across the Koblat, a high-altitude karst plateau, to Lake Engeratsgund or to the summit of the Großer Daumen via its normal route. Easier and shorter options include the Panorama Trail and the hike to Lake Seealp, both of which start at the Höfatsblick station.
Please keep in mind that all of these activities take place in alpine terrain. Make sure you have the appropriate equipment and experience, and do not put yourself at unnecessary risk.
During winter, the Nebelhorn offers a wide range of winter sports activities.
