Geocache Description:

English version

The oldest German lighthouse is at the harbor entrance to Travemünde.
It has been a listed building since 1922 and now houses an eight-story maritime museum that provides insight into the history of beacon technology. It is also an attractive observation tower next to the Trave, which is used by large ships. Its stairs lead upwards over 142 steps.
The old lighthouse was built by Dutch masons in 1539 after Danish troops had destroyed its predecessor five years earlier. An open wood fire was probably initially used as a beacon, and later hemp oil lamps in front of gold-plated concave mirrors. In 1827 the upper part burned down after a lightning strike and was rebuilt two floors higher and equipped with petroleum lamps. Electric arc lamps have been in use since 1903 and incandescent lamps since 1937. This technology is still functional today.

The Maritim Hotel, 114 meters above sea level, has been the beacon for the Travemünde harbor entrance since 1974. In the shadow of the high-rise building 150 meters away, the old lighthouse was switched off in 1972.

There is a brick house right next to the lighthouse, enter your full name in the checker and you will receive an email address to which you can send a message with the subject: <Your cacher name>, you will receive a confirmation straight away.
