The Young Ladies of Penestin
Once upon a time, there were three young and beautiful young ladies, childhood friends, who had found love with three proud and courageous sailors from Tréhiguier. But all were poor, and without fortune, it was impossible to organize their weddings, which in those days lasted a whole week. One evening, one of the sailors, a fisherman by trade, had an idea: "We'll each go out to sea on a boat and catch as many fish as possible. With such a catch, we'll finally be able to pay for our weddings!" The second frowned: "You're right... but at this time of year, the sea is capricious; it might swallow us whole." "Exactly!" exclaimed the third. "No one dares venture out to sea right now. We'll be the only ones selling fish, and we'll get a good price for it." "Then our fortune is made!" they cried in unison. Immediately, they prepared their sardine boats and set sail for a three-week fishing trip. Meanwhile, the three young women waited patiently. To occupy their hands, trembling with worry, they wove rush baskets and dreamed together of their dresses, the music, and the feasts to come. Finally, on the morning of the 21st day, they met on the beach at the Gold Mine. There, facing the horizon, they scanned the waves, hoping to glimpse the red-dyed cotton sails that would bring their beloveds back. The wind blew gently, the sun shone, and they waited. Suddenly, a sail appeared in the distance. A tired boat, tossed by the waves, was slowly approaching. One of the young women recognized it. Her heart pounding, she embraced her friends and ran to meet it. The other two remained on the beach, patient and confident. Other sails would appear, that was certain… They waited… and waited… but the sea remained desperately empty. The sun set, the breeze grew cooler. They waited some more… so long that their hope faded. Sorrow froze their hearts, which became as hard as stone. Then, gently, their bodies followed, transforming into rock, anchored forever to that beach. And so, since that day, the two rocks that can be seen at the water's edge have been called the Maidens of Pénestin, eternal witnesses to love and endless waiting.
