Welcome to Sydney's Iconic
Luna Park
Luna Park has been on this site for over 90 years, and is still going strong!
I remember my first visit here back in the 1960s. I got stung on my big toe by a bee before we went and, even though the toe swelled up, I said nothing to my parents in case the trip was cancelled. And yes, I had fun!
Many more visits occurred during the 1970s. My favourite rides are / were the Big Dipper and the Rotor.
SHORT HISTORY
The site now occupied by Luna Park was used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from 1924 to 1932. Once construction was completed, North Sydney Council looked to put the site to another use, and the owners of Luna Park in Glenelg, South Australia, Herman Phillips and others, won the tender for a 20 year lease. They moved their rides and reinstalled them here.
The famous 9 metre tall face was originally designed by Rupert Browne, and the two 26 metre towers were based on New York's Chrysler Building. In 1960 Arthur Barton redesigned the face to look happy, inspired by the likeness of Old King Cole. In 1973 the face was repainted in a pop art style by Martin Sharp and Peter Kingston - essentially the face we know today.
The tragedy of the Ghost Train fire in 1979, with the loss of seven lives, saw the park closed until 1982.
Throughout it's history nearby residents have complained about the noise... This resulted in the park closing again between 1996 and 2004. The unfortunate result of this closure was the loss of the iconic Big Dipper roller coaster - loved that ride!
Thankfully, since then Luna park has operated continually for over 20 years.

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS
There is no need to pay anything to access the cache - entry to the park is free. However, you need to check opening times on the day of your visit to ensure you can walk in and answer question 2. Typical opening times are:
- Sunday to Thursday 10am to 6pm (or Luna Lite days 10am to 2pm)
- Fridays and Saturdays 10am to 8pm
You can check each day's opening hours on Luna Park's website - https://www.lunaparksydney.com/
1. Take a photo of yourself, or (if you are shy) your Geocaching name, in front of the iconic Smiling Face. Your photo must incliude both:
- the Luna Park Face; and
- the word "ROTOR" on the right hand side of the structure (see the background photo for an example)
Extra points if you try to emulate the Smiling Face's grin! Double extra points if you also tell us what your favourite ride(s) are in your log.
2. Walk through the mouth and message me the five words written high on the back of the face's structure.
Do not include these words in your log, or any photo accompanying your log. Such logs may be deleted.
You can log your find when you visit the site, however, please add your photo and message me the answer to Q2 within 7 days. Logs without a photo and a messaged answer will be regularly deleted.
