Am Eingang des Maltatals liegt die historische Künstlerstadt Gmünd, die als südliches Tor zu einer der beeindruckendsten Naturregionen Kärntens gilt. Von hier aus erstreckt sich das Maltatal bis in die hochalpine Bergwelt der Hohen Tauern und zur imposanten Kölnbreinsperre. Aufgrund seiner zahlreichen Wasserfälle, Wildbäche und Schluchten wird das Tal auch als „Tal der stürzenden Wasser“ bezeichnet.

Wasserfälle und Naturerlebnisse

Das Maltatal ist vor allem für seine spektakulären Wasserfälle bekannt. Entlang des Tales und der Malta Hochalmstraße stürzen unzählige Wasserfälle über steile Felswände in die Tiefe und prägen das Landschaftsbild.

Zu den bekanntesten Naturattraktionen zählen:

• Die Malteiner Wasserspiele mit ihren tiefblauen Wasserbecken und eindrucksvollen Aussichtspunkten.
• Der Fallbach, Kärntens höchster Wasserfall mit rund 200 Metern Fallhöhe.
• Zahlreiche weitere Wasserfälle entlang der Malta Hochalmstraße, die besonders nach Regenfällen oder während der Schneeschmelze ein beeindruckendes Naturschauspiel bieten.

Die Malta Hochalmstraße

Die rund 14,4 Kilometer lange Malta Hochalmstraße zählt zu den schönsten Alpenstraßen Österreichs. Sie führt durch eindrucksvolle Natursteintunnel, vorbei an tosenden Wasserfällen und spektakulären Aussichtspunkten bis hinauf zur Kölnbreinsperre auf 1.933 Metern Seehöhe.

Die Kölnbreinsperre – Österreichs höchste Staumauer

Die Kölnbreinsperre ist das Wahrzeichen des Maltatals und eine der bedeutendsten technischen Meisterleistungen Österreichs. Sie bildet den Abschluss der Malta Hochalmstraße und liegt eingebettet in die eindrucksvolle Hochgebirgslandschaft der Hohen Tauern.

Airwalk – Ausblick in die Tiefe

Ein besonderes Highlight ist der sogenannte Airwalk – eine gläserne Aussichtsplattform an der Staumauer. Von hier eröffnet sich ein spektakulärer Blick über den Kölnbreinspeicher und rund 200 Meter hinunter ins Maltatal.

Der Kölnbreinspeicher

Hinter der Staumauer erstreckt sich der tiefblaue Kölnbreinspeicher, einer der größten künstlichen Seen Österreichs. Umgeben von den Gipfeln der Hohen Tauern bildet er eine eindrucksvolle Kulisse und zählt zu den beliebtesten Ausflugszielen der Region.

Aufgabe

Um diesen Virtual Cache loggen zu können, müsst ihr mind. vier Fotos entlang des Maltatals aufnehmen und an euren Log anhängen.

Folgende Fotos sind von den angegebenen Wegpunkten aus zu machen:

• Foto von der Burg Gmünd
• Foto vom Fallbach-Wasserfall
• Foto vom Melnikfall
• Foto von der Staumauer
• optional Foto am Airwalk

In jedem Foto müsst entweder ihr selbst ODER euer Nickname zu sehen sein. 
Das heißt: wenn ihr nicht selbst am Bild zu sehen sein wollt, dann MUSS euer Nickname im Bild zu sehen sein. Ob ihr diesen auf eine Schlüsselanhänger habt, auf einen Zettel, eure Hand, oder sonst wo hin schreibt, ist dabei völlig egal. Seid kreativ! Hauptsache der Name ist im Bild zu sehen!

Logs ohne Foto und/oder falschen Fotos und/oder ohne/schlecht erkennbaren Nicknamen und/oder Fotos die mit einem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm oder der KI erstellt/bearbeitet wurden, werden kommentarlos gelöscht!

Wichtige Info

Die Malta-Hochalmstraße ist eine gebührenplichtige Mautstraße die von Mai bis Oktober täglich von 7:00 bis 18:00 befahren werden kann.

Der Saisonstart und das Saisonende können sich jederzeit aufgrund der Wetter- und Lawinensituation verschieben. Bitte erkundige dich vor der Anreise nach den aktuellen Betriebszeiten.

At the entrance to the Malta Valley lies the historic artists’ town of Gmünd, considered the southern gateway to one of Carinthia’s most impressive natural regions. From here, the Malta Valley stretches into the high-alpine mountain world of the Hohe Tauern and up to the imposing Kölnbrein Dam. Due to its numerous waterfalls, mountain streams, and gorges, the valley is also known as the “Valley of Falling Waters.”

Waterfalls and Nature Experiences

The Malta Valley is especially famous for its spectacular waterfalls. Along the valley and the Malta High Alpine Road, countless waterfalls plunge down steep rock faces, shaping the unique landscape.

Among the best-known natural attractions are:

• The Malteiner Wasserspiele, featuring deep-blue pools and impressive viewpoints.
• Fallbach Waterfall, Carinthia’s highest waterfall, with a drop of approximately 200 meters.
• Numerous other waterfalls along the Malta High Alpine Road, which offer a particularly impressive natural spectacle after rainfall or during snowmelt.

The Malta High Alpine Road

The approximately 14.4-kilometer-long Malta High Alpine Road is considered one of Austria’s most beautiful alpine roads. It leads through impressive natural stone tunnels, past roaring waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints, all the way up to the Kölnbrein Dam at an altitude of 1,933 meters.

The Kölnbrein Dam – Austria’s Highest Dam

The Kölnbrein Dam is the landmark of the Malta Valley and one of Austria’s most significant engineering achievements. It marks the end of the Malta High Alpine Road and is nestled within the stunning high-mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern.

Airwalk – A View into the Depths

A special highlight is the Airwalk, a glass viewing platform attached to the dam. From here, visitors enjoy a spectacular view over the Kölnbrein Reservoir and approximately 200 meters down into the Malta Valley.

The Kölnbrein Reservoir

Behind the dam stretches the deep-blue Kölnbrein Reservoir, one of Austria’s largest artificial lakes. Surrounded by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, it provides a stunning backdrop and is one of the region’s most popular excursion destinations.

About the Cache

Task

To log this Virtual Cache, you must take at least four photos along the Malta Valley and attach them to your log.

The following photos must be taken from the specified waypoints:

• Photo of Gmünd Castle
• Photo of Fallbach Waterfall
• Photo of Melnikfall Waterfall
• Photo of the Kölnbrein Dam
• Optional: Photo at the Airwalk

Every photo must show either you or your nickname.

If you don’t want to appear in the photo yourself, then your nickname must be visible somewhere in the picture. Whether it’s on a keychain, a piece of paper, written on your hand, or displayed in any other way is completely up to you. Get creative! The only requirement is that your name is visible in the photo!

Logs without photos, with incorrect photos, without a clearly visible nickname, or with photos that have been created or edited using image-editing software or AI will be deleted without notice.

Important Information

The Malta High Alpine Road is a toll road and can be driven daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between May and October.

The start and end of the season may change at any time depending on weather and avalanche conditions. Please check the current operating hours before your visit.
