The Boathouse at Newmillerdam, a Grade II listed building in West Yorkshire, was built around 1820–1835 by the Pilkington family of Chevet Hall as a private sporting lodge for duck shooting and fishing. Situated on the lake, it allowed for entertaining guests in the upper room, while storing boats below. It later became part of a public country park.

Historical Background and Use

• Origin: The Pilkingtons, who owned the nearby Chevet Hall estate, built the structure for recreation.

• Structure & Function: The building featured a lower area with a jetty for a small boat, often used for shooting excursions where ducks were brought to the hall.

• Social Use: It served as a venue for picnics and leisure for the Pilkington family and their guests.

• Significance: It was part of a large 2,340-acre private estate until it was purchased by Wakefield Council in 1954.

Restoration and Modern Era

• Decay: Prior to its restoration, the boathouse was in a poor state of repair.

• Restoration: Following the council's acquisition, it was renovated in 1999 for £272,000, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, and Wakefield Council.

• Present Day: Today, it is a key landmark in the Newmillerdam Country Park, popular with visitors, walkers, and photographers. It is located along a scenic, accessible walking path near the village of Newmillerdam, which has history dating back to a corn mill established around 1285
