Het verhaal
Nello is een arme weesjongen in een arm boerendorp aan de rand van de stad Antwerpen. Zijn moeder sterft als hij twee jaar oud is, en Nello blijft achter in de handen van zijn grootvader Johan Daas.
Elke dag vervoert hij met zijn grootvader verse melk van de boerderij naar de burgers in de stad. Op een dag vinden ze langs de weg een door mishandeling uitgeputte trekhond, 'Patrasche', die daar achtergelaten is door zijn meester. Nello en zijn grootvader vangen het dier op. Nello en Patrasche worden een grote hulp voor de steeds ouder en zieker wordende Johan, die de melkhandel steeds meer moet overlaten in de handen van Nello en zijn hond. Desondanks ontwikkelt Nello zich als een gelukkige jongen: hij schept een intense vriendschapsband met zijn hond en het dochtertje van de lokale molenaar, Alois.
Bovendien blijkt Nello een begenadigd tekenaar te zijn. Tijdens zijn bezoeken aan de kathedraal van Antwerpen staat hij vol bewondering voor de schilderijen van Rubens, die voor hem een groot voorbeeld blijken te zijn. Hij is dan ook misnoegd als blijkt dat de twee schilderijen van de kruisafneming, op de zijaltaren, verborgen blijven voor het niet-betalend publiek, er vast van overtuigd dat Rubens het zelf nooit zo zou hebben gewild. Op een dag ziet hij in een tekenwedstrijd een kans om zijn talent te tonen aan de wereld.
De molenaar is niet echt opgetogen met de vriendschap tussen zijn dochter en Nello en probeert zijn dochter weg te houden van de jonge armoedzaaier. Nello's grootvader overlijdt en als de molen afbrandt krijgt Nello bij overmaat van ramp al snel de schuld op zich geschoven, waardoor hij zijn melk niet meer kan verkopen. Nello staat al snel op straat. Als hij verneemt dat hij ook de tekenwedstrijd, waar hij zijn laatste hoop op had gevestigd, niet heeft gewonnen, stort hij zich op kerstavond teleurgesteld neer in de kathedraal van Antwerpen. Hij sterft van ontbering, met zijn hond in de armen gekluisterd.
Dit is een volksverhaal dat meerdere variaties kent en voornamelijk gekend is in Japan en de Verenigde Staten.

The story:
Nello is a poor orphan boy in a poor farming village on the outskirts of Antwerp. His mother dies when he is only two years old, and Nello is left in the care of his grandfather, Johan Daas.
Every day, he and his grandfather deliver fresh milk from the farm to the townspeople. One day, they find a dog, ‘Patrasche’, exhausted from abuse, abandoned by his master by the roadside. Nello and his grandfather take the animal in. Nello and Patrasche become a great help to Johan, who is growing ever older and sicker and has to leave the milk trade increasingly in the hands of Nello and his dog. Despite this, Nello grows up to be a happy boy..He forms a close bond of friendship with his dog and the local miller’s young daughter, Alois.
Moreover, Nello proves to be a gifted illustrator. During his visits to Antwerp Cathedral, he stands in awe of Rubens’ paintings, which prove to be a great inspiration to him. He is therefore dismayed to discover that the two paintings of the Descent from the Cross, on the side altars, remain hidden from the non-paying public, firmly convinced that Rubens himself would never have wanted it that way. One day, he sees an opportunity in a drawing competition and this is a chance to show his talent to the world.
The miller isn’t exactly thrilled about the friendship between his daughter and Nello and tries to keep his daughter away from the poor child. Nello’s grandfather dies and, to make matters worse, when the mill burns down, Nello is quickly blamed, meaning he can no longer sell his milk. Nello soon finds himself out on the street. When he learns that he has not won the drawing competition either – on which he had pinned his last hopes –On Christmas Eve, he collapses in despair inside Antwerp Cathedral. He dies of starvation, holding his dog in his arms.
This is a story that has several variations and is mainly known in Japan and the United States.
