Sydney Town Hall, completed in 1889 after two decades of construction, dramatically transformed the civic heart of Sydney. Built on the former site of the city’s main cemetery (Old Burial Ground), its grand Victorian Second Empire architecture—featuring a towering clock and ornate sandstone façade—signalled Sydney’s emergence as a confident colonial capital. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and ambitious public buildings in Australia.
The Town Hall became more than a seat of local government; it hosted suffrage rallies, wartime recruitment drives, and cultural milestones, embedding itself in the social and political fabric of the city.
And things are changing again.
Looking east across George Street to the building on the corner of Park Street, the aging Sydney Square Office Building (formerly the Department of Education building) is slated for demolition in late 2026. This will make way for Sydney Square Public Park, reconnecting the Town Hall precinct with Hyde Park.
Construction of the park is expected to begin in early 2027, with completion targeted for mid-2028. The new park will feature native landscaping, public seating, and interpretive heritage elements—honouring both the Gadigal people and Sydney’s civic evolution—while opening up sightlines to the Town Hall’s historic façade, restoring the grand civic vision first imagined over 130 years ago.

Meet you on the stairs
Back in the ye olde times when I was a young adult, when meeing people in the city, it was common practise to say "I'll meet you on Town Hall Stairs." Right in the middle of the city, near the train station, it has always been a convienient spot that allowed people coming from any direction to gather centrally.
What makes this virtual cache special?
This is your chance to create a history! As noted above, things are changing and you get to help record those changes over time. Together, we'll build an archive of images that documents the latest improvements to the look of Sydney. Be sure to include information about what brought you to Sydney on this visit in your log, and if you have any memories of Sydney Town Hall, please share those too.
How to claim this virtual cache
This cache requires you to take TWO (2) photos and make ONE (1) observation
- Take a photo with you, your team, or something with your caching name on it, at the stairs of Sydney Town Hall.
Feel free to stand, sit, pose, jump, or lay on the the stairs or handrail. Consider asking a passer-by to take a wider shot of you to capture as much of the building as you can. Be creative!

- While standing on the stairs you will be looking across the street to the east. Take a photo of what you see there.
If you're here in 2026, then you'll see a building that has a Woolworths sign on it. In the future you'll see a building site, and eventually a public park. This cache will document that process evolving.

May 2026
- Walk down the stairs, turn right (towards the south) on George St and around the building into the plaza. Looking at the beautiful sandstone of Town Hall you'll see three lion grotesques on corners of that side of the building. Message me through GC and tell me what you think the expression is on the face the THIRD lion. You'll know you're at the correct lion when you see him.
Amusing and creative answers are the most welcome!!
