Calendal (ou, en provençal : Calendau), jeune et vaillant pêcheur de Cassis, est aussi un marin intrépide. Un jour, sur les pentes sauvages du mont Gibal, il aperçoit une jeune femme d’une beauté envoûtante et magique, que les gens du pays croient être une fée. Parvenu jusqu’à elle, il découvre qu’elle se nomme Estérelle et qu’elle est la baronne d’Eiglun, dernière héritière d’une illustre famille princière des Baux, symbole jadis de la puissance et de la gloire de la Provence.

Estérelle lui confie alors son tragique passé : parmi les nombreux prétendants qui la courtisaient, elle avait choisi le comte Séveran, séduit par son audace. Mais, le jour même de leurs noces, une terrible vérité éclate : Séveran n’est qu’un chef de brigands, un aventurier cruel, coupable des pires crimes. Horrifiée, la jeune femme s’enfuit dans la montagne et trouve refuge sur le mont Gibal, où Calendal la rencontre.

Malgré son amour pour Estérelle, celle-ci refuse de s’engager, lui racontant son histoire pour justifier son refus. Calendal, désespéré mais déterminé, décide d’affronter Séveran. Il part à sa rencontre, se demandant comment un seul homme pourrait vaincre une armée de bandits. Pourtant, face à son ennemi, il le provoque en lui racontant ses propres exploits, et surtout sa rencontre, sur le mont Gibal, avec une femme aussi belle qu’une fée…

One day, on the wild slopes of Mount Gibal, he sees a young woman of enchanting and magical beauty, whom the locals believe to be a fairy. Having reached her, he discovers that she is called Esterelle and that she is the Baroness of Eiglun, the last heiress of an illustrious princely family of Les Baux, a symbol of the power and glory of Provence.

Esterelle then entrusts her past: among the many suitors who courted her, she had chosen Count Severan, seduced by her audacity. But on the very day of their wedding, a terrible truth breaks out: Severan is only a leader of robbers, a cruel adventurer, guilty of the worst crimes. Horrified, the young woman flees into the mountain and finds refuge on Mount Gibal, where Calendal meets her.

Despite her love for Esterelle, she refused to commit, telling her her story to justify her refusal. Calendal, desperate but determined, decides to face Severan. He goes to meet him, wondering how only one man could defeat an army of bandits. Yet, in front of his enemy, he provokes him by telling him his own exploits, and especially his encounter, on Mount Gibal, with a woman as beautiful as a fairy...
