Geocache Description:

This road leads to the shadowed tip of reality: you're on a through-route to the place of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable... it's limits are only those of the mind itself. Ladies and gentlemen, you're entering the wonderous dimension of imagination. Next stop: the Anchorage Gravity Hill.

Welcome to the only recorded gravity hill in Alaska! Defying the laws of gravity and common sense, vehicles appear mysteriously coast uphill in this spot.

Instructions:

  1. Stop completely at ground zero, just before Jeanne Road, facing west, towards Anchorage
(your back will be to the larger hill).
  2. Place your vehicle in neutral and take your foot off the breaks.
  3. Your vehicle will begin to magically roll to the top of the slight hill.
  4. Enjoy the ride!

Caution: This is an active residential area. Please remain situationally aware at all times with regard to other vehicles, pedestrians, and wildlife. Using your vehicle's hazard lights is recommended.

What's actually going on here?

A gravity hill, also known as a magnetic hill, mystery hill, mystery spot, gravity road, or anti-gravity hill, is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an, illusion making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope. Thus, a car left out of gear will appear to be rolling uphill against gravity.

Despite the feeling of defying gravity, it is a purely optical illusion caused by the surrounding terrain. The lack of a true horizon line and the slant of the surrounding trees and hills trick your brain into misperceiving a slight downhill slope as an incline instead.

Two Logging Requirements

1. Submit a selfie or a picture of a personal item (eg. nametag, signature item, GPS, etc), with the hill clearly visible in the background. This area is a bit askew... perhaps something about your photo should be as well?  Logs that do not include this photo will be deleted.

2. In your log, give us your best conspiracy theory of what's really going on here: Forget the science for a minute. Is it UFOs? Pirates? A secret plot by the government of San Lorenzo? Tell us! It should be worthy of a D3.5 cache, please.
