Geocache Description:

NOTE: June 18, 2026 I have increased the difficulty on this one because in the first week it became obvious that reading comprehension is a challenge I had not anticipated. I've also changed a key requirement that was already in bold and italics to UPPER  CASE. Please don't put me in the position of deleting your log because your photo didn't reflect the requirements!

It's about time Sitka had a virtual cache to go along with the state's oldest caches which are located in the area. This one will be easier to locate than Centurion Guards.

At the posted coordinates you will locate a wooden sign on the wall of a church other than the Cathedral .

In Order to Claim a Find

You must take (or have a friend take) a photo of yourself AT THE POSTED COORDINATES while you are pointing to or "holding" the clock on the southwest face of the steeple of the church located in the center of the street. Attach the photo to your "found it" log.

Each individual claiming a find must have an attached photo specific to themselves. You do not have to include your face in your photo. DO  NOT send the photo to the cache owner. There is no need to correspond with the cache owner - just post the specific photo with your log. Logs that do not meet the photo requirement will be deleted.

More information about the cathedral:

The St. Michael Cathedral is a National Historic Landmark. Constructed between 1844 and 1848, the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel is the principal representative of Russian cultural influence in the 19th century in North America. From 1840 to 1872, Sitka was the Seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese which governed all of North America, and thereafter it continued as the Seat of the Diocese of Alaska. In 1966, when St. Michael’s was well over a century old, a fire swept through downtown Sitka. Parishioners and residents managed to rescue most of the cathedral’s icons, furniture, books and other valuables before the structure burned to the ground. Based on the original blueprints, reconstruction began right away but it wasn’t until 1977 that the rebuilt cathedral was consecrated, and worship services could resume.
