Gunnar Sønsteby var en av de mest kjente motstandsfolkene i Norge under andre verdenskrig. For sin krigsinnsats er han Norges høyest dekorerte borger gjennom tidene. Etter krigen brukte Sønsteby mye tid på formidling av motstandskampens historie under okkupasjonsårene. Dette gjorde ham til en berømt og folkekjær person i Norge.
Sønsteby kom fra Rjukan og bodde i Oslo da Tyskland angrep Norge i 1940. Han deltok i kampene i Sør-Norge i 1940. I 1942 ble han rekruttert av den britiske spesialtjenesten SOE («Special Operations Executive»). Han ble SOE sin fremskutte kontakt til de norske motstandsgruppen i Oslo-området. Senere dro han til Storbritannia og ble del av Kompani Linge. Han kom tilbake til Norge på slutten av 1943 som operatør for Kompani Linge og Milorgs sentralledelse (SL). Som leder for SLs aksjonsgruppe, Oslogjengen, utførte han fra våren 1944 og frem til 1945 en rekke dristige aksjoner mot den tyske okkupasjonsmakten og det norske okkupasjonsstyret under Nasjonal Samling.
For å unngå arrestasjon benyttet Sønsteby en rekke dekknavn. Det mest velkjente av dem var «Nr. 24», men innenfor hjemmefronten og blant norske myndigheter i Storbritannia og Sverige ble han også omtalt som «Gunnar Lier», «Erling Fjeld», «Krogh» eller bare «Kjakan».
Etter frigjøringen ble Sønsteby landets høyest dekorerte krigsdeltaker, og han markerte seg som en trofast forsvarsvenn og forkjemper for krigsveteranenes sak. Med boka «Rapport fra Nr. 24» og gjennom sin senere foredrags- og formidlingsvirksomhet, ble han ikke bare en rikskjendis – men nærmest et ikon for populærhistorien om den norske motstandskampen.
Sønsteby er portrettert i blant annet filmene Max Manus (2008) og Nr. 24 (2024).

Gunnar Sønsteby was one of the most famous resistance fighters in Norway during World War II. For his war efforts, he is Norway's most highly decorated citizen of all time. After the war, Sønsteby spent a lot of time disseminating the history of the resistance struggle during the occupation years. This made him a famous and beloved person in Norway.
Sønsteby came from Rjukan and was living in Oslo when Germany attacked Norway in 1940. He participated in the fighting in southern Norway in 1940. In 1942, he was recruited by the British special service SOE ("Special Operations Executive"). He became SOE's forward contact with the Norwegian resistance groups in the Oslo area. Later, he went to Britain and became part of Kompani Linge. He returned to Norway at the end of 1943 as an operator for Kompani Linge and Milorg's central leadership (SL). As leader of the SL's action group, the Oslo Gang, he carried out a number of daring actions against the German occupation forces and the Norwegian occupation government under Nasjonal Samling from the spring of 1944 until 1945.
To avoid arrest, Sønsteby used a number of code names. The most well-known of them was "No. 24", but within the home front and among Norwegian authorities in Britain and Sweden he was also referred to as "Gunnar Lier", "Erling Fjeld", "Krogh" or simply "Kjakan".
After the liberation, Sønsteby became the country's most highly decorated war participant, and he distinguished himself as a loyal friend of the defense and champion of the war veterans' cause. With the book "Report from No. 24" and through his later lecturing and dissemination activities, he became not only a national celebrity - but almost an icon for the popular history of the Norwegian resistance.
Sønsteby is portrayed in the films Max Manus (2008) and Nr. 24 (2024), among others.
