Welcome to Allen's Old Stone Dam!
Take a leisurely walk along a scenic trail while discovering the history of the old dam that played a key role in shaping Allen into the city it is today. This site may be the only known stone dam in Texas that was used as a railroad water station—and possibly the only one of its kind still standing in the United States. In recognition of its significance, it was designated a State Archaeological Landmark in 2001 and later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
The town of Allen was established in 1872 by the Houston & Texas Central Railway along its Galveston-to-Denison route and was named for Ebenezer Allen, an Attorney General for the Republic of Texas and an early advocate for the railroad. Because of its proximity to Cottonwood Creek, the area was selected as an ideal location for a water station. The site once featured a stone dam, water tower, pump house, an interconnected system of pipes, and a workhouse for railroad employees. This lab will guide you to five key locations where you can learn more about this important historic site.
It is simple to claim this cache. All you have to do is post a picture of you (face not required) or other personal item on the bridge with the Old Stone Dam in the background while making the Peace Sign.
