Frankfurt Central Station today

Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is today one of the largest and most important railway stations in Germany. Above ground it has 25 long-distance and regional tracks, and below ground there are further tracks for the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn – with well over 100 operational tracks in total, it ranks among the largest terminus stations in Europe. Around 500,000 travellers and visitors use it every day, and roughly 342 long-distance and 290 regional trains run here. That makes it “only” the second busiest station in Germany after Hamburg Central Station, yet Deutsche Bahn nevertheless calls it the country’s most important station – above all because of its central position within the German and European rail network.

1888 – Europe’s largest railway station

The main station was opened in 1888, after five years of construction. It replaced three separate terminus stations, each of which had previously been operated by a different, competing railway company – a circumstance that was still reflected in the original layout of the platform halls: three halls with six tracks each corresponded to the three former companies. The new building emerged from an architectural competition with 55 entries; the commission went to Hermann Eggert, who designed the reception building in the Neo-Renaissance style, and to Johann Wilhelm Schwedler, who designed the iron platform halls with their barrel vaults up to 28 metres high. When it opened, Frankfurt Central Station was the largest railway station in Europe – a rank it did not relinquish until 1915, with the construction of Leipzig Central Station. For Frankfurt the station was therefore far more than merely a piece of transport infrastructure: it stood as a symbol of the city’s rise to become one of the most significant trade and transport hubs of the German Empire.

Historic view of Frankfurt Central Station

An almost forgotten chapter

During my research, however, I also came across an almost completely forgotten chapter in the history of Frankfurt Central Station (note: the following text is based partly on facts and partly on the owner’s imagination): after the station opened, the number of travellers rose year after year. Whereas before Frankfurt was connected to the rail network most visitors had arrived from the surrounding Hessian countryside, all of a sudden visitors from all over Europe – and in part from even more distant countries – were arriving at Frankfurt Central Station. As a result, visitors from all over the world suddenly encountered Frankfurt culture completely unprepared. This did not always pass off without conflict, until the people of Frankfurt had a brilliant idea: they founded the “Königlich-Preußische Anstalt für Fremdenempfang und Integration in den Frankfurter Kulturraum” (Royal Prussian Institute for the Reception and Integration of Foreigners in the Frankfurt Cultural Region), which offered visitors to the city a short test on its premises with which they could prepare for Hessian customs and for their visit to Frankfurt. Anyone who passed the test received a so-called “Bembel Pass”, with which the traveller could identify themselves as a person equipped with the knowledge necessary for everyday life in Frankfurt.

In the course of my enquiries I was able to find out that the institute kept developing its test further and planned to use new technology to allow travellers to sit the “Bembel Pass” examination while still on their journey. In this way travellers would be able to make optimal use of their travelling time and be ideally prepared the moment they set their first step out of the train onto Frankfurt soil. Unfortunately, I was not able to find out whether this plan was ever put into practice. The institute’s premises were closed down years ago, and all I could still find were the following old directions to its former seat, together with a matching city map:

The old directions

When you are standing on the square in front of the station, first walk into Kaiserstraße. Take the first street on the right and then turn left again immediately afterwards. Cross the next intersection before turning left again. Follow the street until it no longer continues straight ahead, then, after a left-hand bend, turn right again immediately. Follow the street to its end. If you then turn right once more and afterwards left again, you will be standing directly in front of our entrance. We look forward to your visit!

⚠  LOGGING REQUIREMENTS

You may only log this Virtual Cache if you fulfil the two (!) following logging requirements:

1

THE BEMBEL PASS

Find the new entrance to the “Königlich-Preußische Anstalt für Fremdenempfang und Integration in den Frankfurter Kulturraum” (Royal Prussian Institute for the Reception and Integration of Foreigners in the Frankfurt Cultural Region). The access number is the date of the inauguration of the main station in the format DDMMYYYY. Pass the test and upload your personalised Bembel Pass together with your log.

2

THE PHOTO IN THE STATION HALL

The first visitors to the main station described it as a “huge cathedral of modern technology”. Besides the electric lighting that was present from the very beginning – spectacular at the time – it was above all the gigantic steel halls that impressed them. Together with your log, upload a second photo showing a piece of paper with your geocaching name on it and the large station halls in the background – the sight that greeted travellers first when they stepped off the train.

Dworzec Główny we Frankfurcie dziś

Proszę iść ulicą do samego końca.

Frankfurtské hlavní nádraží (Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof) patří dnes k největším a nejvýznamnějším nádražím v Německu. Denně jej využívá asi 500 000 cestujících a návštěvníků a projíždí tudy přibližně 342 dálkových a 290 regionálních vlaků.

Zahněte do první ulice vpravo a poté ihned opět vlevo. Přejděte následující křižovatku, než zahnete znovu vlevo. Pokračujte ulicí, dokud už nelze jít rovně, a pak po levotočivé zatáčce zahněte ihned opět vpravo. Pokračujte ulicí až na konec. Zahnete-li potom ještě jednou vpravo a poté znovu vlevo, budete stát přímo před naším vchodem. Těšíme se na Vaši návštěvu!

⚠  PODMÍNKY ZÁPISU

Tuto Virtual Cache smí zalogovat jen ten, kdo splní dvě (!) následující podmínky:

1

BEMBEL-PASS
