Geocache Description:

TUNE KIRKE

Ny kirke i 1865

Brannen i 1908

NB! Logger uten bilde vil bli slettet.

Tune Church is a church in Sarpsborg Municipality in Østfold. It is located at the southern end of Tunevannet, about 3 km west of the center of Sarpsborg. The church belongs to the Church of Norway and the Borg Diocese.

History of Tune Church

The Middle Ages – the first church (c. 12th century)

A church has stood on the site for over 900 years. The first church was probably built in the early 12th century, during the Middle Ages. It was a Romanesque stone church with thick walls and a west tower.

At that time, Tune Church was an important county church in the Vingulmork area, which was a historical district in Østfold. The church therefore had a central role in church life in the region.

An interesting find from the area is the Tune Stone, a runestone with one of Norway's longest rune inscriptions. It was found in the cemetery wall by the church.

17th–18th centuries

The old medieval church was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. It eventually fell into poor condition.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the church was actually privately owned by various landowners, including those from Borregaard and Holleby.

In 1859, the municipality bought the church, because it was in such poor condition that it had to be demolished and replaced.

New church in 1865

The old stone church was demolished in 1863, and a new church was built on the same site.

The new church was consecrated on July 12, 1865, and was much larger than the old one, with around 1,100 seats.

The fire in 1908

In May 1908, the church burned down. The fire may have been set after a theft, but it was never solved.

Today's church (1910–)

The current church was built after the fire and inaugurated on December 30, 1910.

It was designed by architect Heinrich Jürgensen.

Facts about today's church:

Year of construction: 1910

Type: long church

Architect: Heinrich Jürgensen

Seats: approx. 700

Belongs to the Borg diocese

The church has subsequently been restored several times, including after a fire in 1970 that damaged parts of the interior.

Other interesting facts

Tune Church is the largest church in Sarpsborg municipality.

It is located on a historic site with many burial mounds from the Iron Age.

It is located along an old road that later became National Road 1 and later E6.

Logging requirements:

Go out on the pier and take a picture of your GPS or Nickname or (yourself, if you wish) with the church in the background, which you attach to your log. NB! Logs without a picture will be deleted.
