Tammelan kirkko on keskiaikainen kivikirkko Tammelan kunnassa, Hämeen sydänmailla. Kirkon ikää on vuosien saatossa arvailtu ja tutkittu, eikä seurakunnan alkuperäinen väite 1400-luvusta mitä luultavimmin voi pitää paikkaansa. Kirkon vanhin osa (kapeampi osa itäpäädyssä) on nykytiedon mukaan valmistunut 1500-luvun puoliväliin mennessä. Seinämaalauksia kirkossa ei ole, perinteisesti seurakunta tahtoi suomalaiseen kansallisromanttiseen tyyliin selittää asiaa köyhyydellään. Valmistumisaika viittaisi kuitenkin siihen, ettei niitä vain ehditty tehdä, ennenkuin uskonpuhdistuksen jälkeen ne kiellettiin. Samoin vietiin kirkosta vanhat pyhimyspatsaat, jotka viime sotien jälkeen sinne palautettiin.
Kirkon uudempi osa on valmistunut 1786. Osin sattumalta, osin hämäläisen päättämättömyyden takia kirkkokäytävästä tuli Suomen toiseksi pisin. Tukholmasta lähetetyissä piirroksissa kirkkoa ei näin pitkäksi aiottu rakentaa. Kellotorni valmistui hieman myöhemmin ja viimeisenä valmistui nykyinen sakasti, kirkon pohjoisseinustalle. Kirkon sisätiloissa ei esillepalautettuja patsaita ja kastemaljaa lukuunottamatta juuri näy mitään keskiaikaista. Voisi jopa kärjistää, että Tammelan kirkko on 1800-lukulainen kivikirkko. Suurimmilta osin kun kirkon sisätilat ovat 1800-luvun lopun asussaan. Sittemmin kirkkoa on toki remontoitu useampaan kertaan, viimeisin isompi remontti valmistui kesällä 2025. Tammela Church is a medieval stone church in Tammela, Tavastia Proper. Its original year of construction is not known precicely, but recent studies suggest, it was completed in mid 16th century - unlike the local tale, which claims, that the church would be almost a hundred years older. Anyway, only the narrower, easternmost part was built that early. There are no frescos in Tammela church. Traditional, national-romantic explanation being, that ethe parish was too poor to afford them. More likely, they had to time. After the Lutheran reformation, such "idolatry" was forbidden - as were all pictures and statues of the Saints. Today, the statues of the Saints are perhaps the most precious artefacts in Tammela - still, they were only returned after WWII.
The church was greatly exdanded westwards in the 18th century. The expansion was completed in 1786. The tower was built even later and the last part to be built was the sacristy, on the north side. One could even say, that Tammela church is a stone church from the 19th century, since the interiors are mostly like they were then. Apart from a few artefacts, there are no medieval features left. The church is in active use, and has thus been renovated regularily. The most recent renovation was completed in 2025.
A peculiar detail is, that the aisle is the second longest in Finland - after Turku Cathedral. This, among other things, has made the church a popular place for weddings - you have plenty of time to regret, walking down the aisle...
