Welcome to the Presidential Palace
The Presidential Palace (Presidentinlinna) is one of Finland’s most important state buildings and the official residence of the President of Finland. Originally constructed in 1820 by a wealthy salt trader, it was eventually sold to the Russian state in 1837 and converted into an Imperial Palace for use by the Russian Tsar when Finland was still an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian empire. The architect responsible for this transformation was Carl Ludvig Engel, whose neoclassical style helped shape much of central Helsinki, including nearby Helsinki Cathedral.
After the Finnish Civil War, another round of extensive building work began in order to prepare the palace for a new role as the royal residence of the newly-elected King of Finland. Before Prince Frederick of Hesse took office however, he renounced the throne in December 1918, clearing the way for Finland to officially become a republic in 1919. Naturally, the most obvious home for the country’s first president was the Former Imperial Palace, and so Finland’s first president, Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg, was also the first to take up residence here.
While the acting president no longer permanently resides here, today the Presidential Palace includes private apartments and reception rooms for the president on the third floor, as well as containing the Office of the President of the Republic. The numerous state rooms include the Hall of State, the Dining Hall, and the Hall of Mirrors (previously the Imperial Throne Room), and are used to host official functions and receptions, including one of the most notable events in the Finnish calendar, the annual December 6th Independence Day Reception. In total, the palace has nearly 3,000 square metres of floor space.
Logging requirements
1. Take a photo of yourself or any personal item with the Presidential Palace in the background and upload the photo with your log. Your face does not need to be visible. Note that it is not possible to access the courtyard, so all photos should be taken a respectful distance from behind the gate.
2. Note in your log whether the president is likely inside at the time of your visit. (Hint: if a flag is visible atop the building then the president is typically in residence or working from the building; if not then the president is likely elsewhere.)
Logs without photos demonstrating that you have actually visited the site will be deleted. An example of a suitable image is shown below.
Tervetuloa Presidentinlinnaan
Presidentinlinna on yksi Suomen tärkeimmistä valtion rakennuksista ja Suomen tasavallan presidentin virka-asunto. Rakennus valmistui alun perin vuonna 1820 varakkaan suolakauppiaan yksityistaloksi, mutta se myytiin Venäjän valtiolle vuonna 1837 ja muutettiin keisarilliseksi palatsiksi Venäjän tsaarin käyttöön aikana, jolloin Suomi oli Venäjän keisarikunnan autonominen suuriruhtinaskunta. Muutostöistä vastasi arkkitehti Carl Ludvig Engel, jonka uusklassinen tyyli on muokannut merkittävän osan Helsingin keskustasta, mukaan lukien läheisen Helsingin tuomiokirkon.
Suomen sisällissodan jälkeen palatsissa aloitettiin jälleen laajat rakennustyöt, joiden tarkoituksena oli valmistella siitä uuden Suomen kuninkaan virallinen asuinpaikka. Ennen kuin Hessenin prinssi Fredrik kuitenkaan ehti nousta valtaistuimelle, hän luopui kruunusta joulukuussa 1918, mikä avasi tien Suomen viralliselle muuttumiselle tasavallaksi vuonna 1919. Luonnollisesti maan ensimmäisen presidentin sopivimmaksi virka-asunnoksi valittiin entinen keisarillinen palatsi, ja näin Suomen ensimmäisestä presidentistä, Kaarlo Juho Ståhlbergista, tuli myös ensimmäinen täällä asunut presidentti.
Vaikka istuva presidentti ei nykyisin yleensä asu Presidentinlinnassa, rakennuksessa sijaitsevat edelleen presidentin yksityiset huoneistot ja edustustilat kolmannessa kerroksessa sekä Tasavallan presidentin kanslia. Linnassa on useita merkittäviä valtiollisia saleja, kuten Valtiopäiväsali, Ruokasali ja Peilisali (entinen keisarillinen valtaistuinsali), joita käytetään virallisiin tilaisuuksiin ja vastaanottoihin. Näihin kuuluu myös yksi Suomen tunnetuimmista juhlatilaisuuksista, vuosittainen itsenäisyyspäivän vastaanotto 6. joulukuuta. Presidentinlinnan kokonaispinta-ala on lähes 3 000 neliömetriä.

2. Kirjaa lokiin, onko presidentti todennäköisesti paikalla vierailusi aikana. (Vinkki: jos rakennuksen katolla on lippu, presidentti on yleensä paikalla tai työskentelee siellä; jos lippua ei ole, presidentti on todennäköisesti muualla.)

🇩🇪 Willkommen beim Präsidentenpalast
Der Präsidentenpalast (finnisch: Presidentinlinna) ist eines der bedeutendsten Staatsgebäude Finnlands und die offizielle Residenz des Präsidenten der Republik Finnland. Ursprünglich wurde das Gebäude im Jahr 1820 von einem wohlhabenden Salzhändler errichtet. Im Jahr 1837 wurde es an den russischen Staat verkauft und in einen Kaiserpalast umgewandelt, der dem russischen Zaren als Aufenthaltsort diente, als Finnland noch ein autonomes Großfürstentum innerhalb des Russischen Reiches war. Verantwortlich für diesen Umbau war der Architekt Carl Ludvig Engel, dessen neoklassizistischer Stil große Teile des Helsinkier Stadtzentrums prägte, darunter auch den nahegelegenen Dom von Helsinki.
Nach dem Finnischen Bürgerkrieg begannen erneut umfangreiche Bauarbeiten, um den Palast auf seine neue Rolle als königliche Residenz des neu gewählten Königs von Finnland vorzubereiten. Bevor Prinz Friedrich Karl von Hessen jedoch sein Amt antreten konnte, verzichtete er im Dezember 1918 auf den Thron. Dadurch wurde der Weg frei für die offizielle Umwandlung Finnlands in eine Republik im Jahr 1919. Als Amtssitz des ersten finnischen Präsidenten bot sich selbstverständlich der ehemalige Kaiserpalast an, und so wurde Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg, der erste Präsident Finnlands, zugleich der erste Bewohner des Gebäudes in seiner neuen Funktion.
Obwohl der amtierende Präsident heute nicht mehr dauerhaft hier wohnt, befinden sich im Präsidentenpalast weiterhin die privaten Apartments und Repräsentationsräume des Präsidenten im dritten Stockwerk sowie das Büro des Präsidenten der Republik. Zu den zahlreichen Staatsräumen gehören unter anderem der Staatssaal, der Speisesaal und der Spiegelsaal (früher der Kaiserliche Thronsaal). Diese Räume werden für offizielle Veranstaltungen und Empfänge genutzt, darunter eines der bekanntesten Ereignisse im finnischen Kalender: der jährliche Unabhängigkeitstagsempfang am 6. Dezember. Insgesamt verfügt der Präsidentenpalast über nahezu 3.000 Quadratmeter Nutzfläche.
Logbedingungen
1. Mache ein Foto von dir selbst oder einem persönlichen Gegenstand mit dem Präsidentenpalast im Hintergrund und lade dieses Foto zusammen mit deinem Log hoch. Dein Gesicht muss dabei nicht sichtbar sein. Bitte beachte, dass der Innenhof nicht zugänglich ist. Alle Fotos sollten daher in angemessenem Abstand hinter dem Tor aufgenommen werden.
2. Vermerke in deinem Log, ob sich der Präsident zum Zeitpunkt deines Besuchs wahrscheinlich im Gebäude befindet. (Tipp: Wenn auf dem Dach eine Flagge weht, befindet sich der Präsident normalerweise im Gebäude oder arbeitet dort. Ist keine Flagge zu sehen, hält er sich wahrscheinlich an einem anderen Ort auf.)
Logs ohne ein Foto, das eindeutig belegt, dass du den Ort tatsächlich besucht hast, werden gelöscht. Ein Beispiel für ein geeignetes Foto ist unten dargestellt.
