About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view (although this location is pretty amazing with a spectacular view!). It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.

About Barron Falls Station

Barron Falls railway station was built as part of the Cairns–to–Kuranda railway line, a major late‑nineteenth‑century engineering project designed to link the port of Cairns with the mineral-rich Atherton Tablelands. Constructed between 1887 and 1891 through the steep and unstable terrain of the Barron Gorge, the line climbs to around 327 metres above sea level at Barron Falls. The station was established as a safe stopping point where trains could pause on the ascent and passengers could view the dramatic waterfall and surrounding rainforest.

As mining declined and transport needs changed, the station’s role shifted from operational to scenic. Today, Barron Falls railway station forms part of the heritage‑listed Kuranda Scenic Railway, where trains stop briefly to allow visitors to enjoy the lookout and learn about the railway’s construction. The station remains a lasting symbol of the ingenuity and effort involved in building railways through Far North Queensland’s challenging landscape. If you’d like to read more about the history of the Cairns to Kuranda Railway, check out this Wikipeida page

Getting Here

To log this cache, you must be on the station platform. There are two options to access the platform. You can either:

  1. Catch the Kuranda Scenic Railway from Cairns, Freshwater or Kuranda. This spectacular journey up or down the mountains through the rainforest takes about 2 hours (one way) with a 10-minute stop at Barron Falls station. A very worthwhile trip for visitors and locals alike.
  2. Drive to the Din Din Barron Falls lookout track (coordinates to parking area provided) and walk approximately 800 metres (one way) along the elevated boardwalk throught the rainforest down to the station platform. Although there are elevation changes, the boardwalk is fully paved and easily accessible to most Geocachers (including those in a wheelchair or with mobility aids).

Logging This Cache

Once on the platform, you need to undertake two tasks to log this cache. First, proceed to Waypoint 01 – Undercover area with informative signs. Find the answers to the following questions:

  1. What year did the search for a suitable railway link from the Atherton Tableland to the coast commence?
  2. What was the explorers first name?
  3. What was his erstwhile mate’s name?
  4. What year did the Government decide in favour of the Barron Gorge route from Cairns?

After you have the answers to the questions, head to Waypoint 02 - Waterfall Lookout (you do not need to climb the fence or leave the platform to access this location). From this location, take a photo of yourself, your Geocaching username or a personal item with the waterfall in the background similar to the pictures below. This picture must be included in your log.

Once you have completed both tasks, send us a message with your answers from Waypoint 01. No need to wait for a reply, you can log your find straight away. Be sure to include your pictures in the log so yourself and others can see how the falls change throughout the year with the weather. Logs without the answers sent and / or your picture uploaded will be deleted.

Happy caching - enjoy this spectacular location!
